Awhile back, we purchased a Sweet Tree roasting chicken on the strong recommendation of a friend, who claims theirs are the best in the area. We were, unfortunately, deeply disappointed, as the roaster was, well, flavorless. When we mentioned this to our friend, he suggested perhaps we got "a bad one," perhaps at the end of the season or something. He suggested we mention this to the vendor. It's been awhile since we were interested in gambling twenty bucks on a roaster that might be disappointing, but today at the farmers; market, we thought we;d give it another try. But first, as our friend suggested, we mentioned our previous experience. The young couple we spoke with could not have been less impressed. Or less interested.I guess we saved twenty bucks.

While I've seen Sweet Tree Farm meets in a few places around Upstate NY, I bought their beef short ribs at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market. The ribs were great! Plenty of meat on them and topped with a nice layer of fat which caramelized nicely; I first seared the short ribs before cooking them in a slow cooker. As stated on its website, Sweet Tree Farm is committed to sustainable farming, does not use growth hormones, nor do they routinely use antibiotics. Their beef is 100% grass-fed and finished. If the quality and flavor of their short ribs are any indication of their other products, they're definitely doing something right!

My boyfriend and I have been buying meat from Sweet Tree for about 4 years. 5 stars because: -we have never really been disappointed with a steak or larger piece of meat, in fact every steak we have had has been delicious. -local, not mass-produced, and at least humane. -customer service via owner and son(s)/daughter is always good, personable, helpful. -it's nice that they can accept debit/credit cards now. -you can't hold back a star just because it's expensive--how do you expect them to do what they are doing and be able to earn a living? They are doing us a big favor by making this local and humane meat available. Plus, nobody needs to eat a lot of meat--just eat less! (to this point, I might recommend that maybe they could have their steaks cut into smaller portions, so that it's possible to buy a few for making dinner for, say 4 people, but not look like an idiot for buying 2 steaks and dividing them between people, also because we have found that a pound of steak for one person is too much, even if we are feeling epicurean)

Husband and I picked up a couple of Sweet Tree Farm's grass fed, humanely raised rib eye steaks at the Troy Farmers Market... and whooo boy, were they tasty! Yes, they are a tad on the pricey side when compared to the supermarket (about $1/ ounce with tax for the rib eye), but the excellent flavor and clear conscious don't hold a candle to that supermarket stuff. Plus, it's still way cheaper than you'll find at any respectable steakhouse. And who doesn't love supporting a good local business? These folks offer a number of items, including various cuts of steak, beef and pork roasts, ribs, chops, sausage, kebabs, bacon, ground meat and chicken. Don't forget the eggs and maple syrup. Plus, they seem to use as much of the animal as possible, given that they also sell shank and marrow bones, dog bones, heart, tongue, oxtail, liver, and beef and pig fat. I love that. Find the friendly Sweet Tree people selling their goods at the Troy Farmers Market (Saturdays), the Schenectady Farmers Market (Sundays) or pick your order up at the farm by appointment. Awesome stuff here; I can't wait to try more. Rock on, Sweet Tree.
