Always, friendly, respectful and on time. The pharmacist is very reasonable and helpful. I feel like I get small town service from a Tops pharmacy and I really appreciate that.

Wegmans lost me as a customer when it decided to cow-tow to the anti-vax crowd and let them run around their Amherst Street store so they could infect people. This Tops is only a couple blocks away. The Wegmans store is often rated as the best grocery store in the USA, which means this Tops has some very tough competition. Let's see how these two stores compare. Accessibility: Both stores are on #32 bus route. Tops is also on #3 Grant bus line, the city's busiest route. Both have adequate parking. Both are on Amherst Street but tops is also on Grant Street. Neither store is close to a sidewalk. Winner: Tops Strange things I don't expect at super markets: Wegmans has a liquor store. Tops has a gas station. I don't drink. Wegmans doesn't offer discounts at the liquor store for shopping in the grocery store. Tops does offer discounts on gas, which is something do buy, for shopping in their store. Winner: Tops Bottle return: Both stores have them. Tie Featured items: Both stores have featured items as you enter. Tops items are usually sale items. At Wegmans the items are generally not on sale. Winner: Tops Produce: Both stores have large produce departments. Wegmans lets you see packaged items being assembled in-store. The variety is excellent in both stores. Winner: Wegmans by a slim margin Bakery (aka kill you with carb kindness): Both stores have in-store bakeries, custom cakes, and loads of goodies. Tie Dry goods: Both stores carry popular brands. Wegmans has more store-brand items. Tops has more name-brand items, but they also put these on sale frequently. Tie Meats: A friend of mine won't buy meats at Wegmans and swears the meats at Tops are far better. Me? I buy my meats at Federal meat market. Winner: Tops by reputation Dairy: Both stores carry a huge array of dairy products. Wegman's cheese section is very nice, but I can get the cheeses I want at Tops, too. Same with yogurts. Tie. Frozen Foods: Tops frozen department is easily twice that of Wegmans. Winner: Tops by a big margin Ice Cream: Tops has a much larger selection of flavors from which to choose. They also have Tops brand light ice cream with half the fat. Winner: Tops by a big margin. Pharmacy and drug store department: Both stores have a pharmacy. Tie. Supply chain issues: Tops seems to be getting stocked on certain popular items like Gatorade, paper products, and Juicy Juice where Wegmans has empty shelves. Winner: Tops Appearance: Wegmans is newer, brighter and nicer. Winner: Wegmans Prepared foods: Wegmans has a much larger variety of prepared foods than Tops. Winner: Wegmans Cleanliness: Tops has a slightly grungy feeling about it. Maybe its the lighting. Tops asks customers and employees to wear masks properly. For those who care about sanitation and cleanliness, the mask issue gives Tops a big win. If you don't care about getting COVID, Wegmans is your store. They love you. Anti-vax and anti-maskers should go to Wegmans. Prices: Sticker prices are higher at Tops but they discount almost everything sometime or other if you use your Tops card. Tops has lots of sale items. Wegmans prices are low every day. Overall, it's a wash. Tie. Despite the less glamorous setting, I think Tops is the winner and its getting my business from now on.

So, if you're looking for gourmet spices or meatless meats, you might want to keep heading east to Wegman's or Lexington Co-op. But there are a number of things that still make this Tops worth a stop. First, they occasionally try to go upmarket by phasing in various gourmet things (e.g. specialty grains, pastas, oils, sauces, etc.). They never sell, because it's a Tops at Grant and Amherst, and so you eventually snag it all at 75% off. They also carry the spicy brand of Hampton Farms peanuts in the shell, a thing that Wegman's (and, it seems, everyone else) sadly neglects to do. There's a surprisingly solid beer selection if you're already there for something else, plus it's not very busy off-peak, so you can generally get in and out without too much wait. The lack of much bakery variety means that this Tops is more of a niche visit than a one-stop-shop for our household's grocery needs, and it's a little on the older and dingier side, but there's still enough value here to keep it in our rotation.

Two weekend I have gone to Tops to get Fish frys for dinner. Every time I call they are prompt with answering the phone and courteous with taking my order. Claude is very friendly and makes sure my meals are hot and fresh. You can tell that he cares about his customers and his job! I recommend going to this location for sure!!!

This location is very convenient for me, I don't normally shop here. But when I do I have no complaints. It can be quite busy at times, but I only need a hand full of things. So I just use the self checkout. Plus they have a gas station located here.

I went to Tops once just to see if it would be better than Wegmans, where I usually go. After 5-10 minutes I realized how their items are overpriced and walked out. Only for some guy to stop me and go "I need to check your bag", I rolled my eyes showed him my bag full of loose change and paper and left. Wegmans is not even a 5 minutes walk down the road. For example: a 2 liter soda at Tops is $2.49 and is on sale 2 for $4 making each 2 liter $2 A 2 liter soda at Wegmans is $1.89 and is on sale for 4 for $5 making each soda $1.25 The Tops spaghetti os is $1.49 and on sale for 88 cents when you buy multiples of 8. At dollar general(also down the road) it's 85 cents regularly and you don't have to buy it in multiples of 8!

Love the pharmacy, wonderful staff, been using this location for years. The store is typical of Tops and Grocery in general. I only grab a few things from this location when I really need too. It's smaller than the burbs, but the biggest issue is the checkout, always lines, often long and even the best clerks are not enough with only 2 or 3 open plus the 4 self-scan (most have 6).

I used to live around the corner from this tops and was never a huge fan. I used to go out of my way to take the longer trip down to Wegmans, which I still believe is the superior store. I do believe this tops has gotten a lot better since their recent remodel, but overall it's still just not a good store. They do have a gas station in the parking lot though, and it's undeniable how convenient that is.

I think there is a special place in hell for this Tops location because I went here looking for carrots and hummus and was very disappointed. There was absolutely no hummus left. As for the carrots, they were on sale and when I checked the expiration date, they were set to expire tomorrow. Come on now folks. I can't really think of anything good to say about the stops, besides the fact that they have a gas station. I hate how the University tops does not have one, so I can't spend my gas points. However the cons outweigh the pros. The parking lot is always a mess because people leave their cars all over the place. It's also kind of sketchy because they must have a problem with crime in this Tops. Whenever I go in at night, there is a security guard and they block off the produce section with carts so that you have to enter through the self check out. I like to do my shopping at 10pm, because that's when I have time, and they only have the self checkout open, which takes forever when you have 60$ worth of food. Ugh. If I'm given the choice, I'd much rather go to Wegmans, even though the prices are higher.

Tops Markets. Good sales. Sometimes appears dirty outside due to litter, but clean inside.
