Some people are complaining about the customer service of this place but I'm only left thinking they're walking into Pilgrim with a stank ass energy and bad vibes. The staff are subtle and intelligent, kind and pleasant too. They're not going to ram products down your throat and kiss your ass like some of the other retailers do in the neighborhood. It's refreshing and a very peaceful shopping experience. This place has a human and personal vibe with incredible music playing at all times. Pilgrim has a pulse. Its not some gift wrapped manufactured box brand type of experience. The owner Chris is an extremely personal and hospitable person with a wild wealth of knowledge about all things culture, art, music and surfing. Make no mistakes if you walk into this store and walk out feeling like you didn't have a good experience it's because YOU suck and has nothing to do with anyone else.

Be wary. They will not give you your money back for returns, only "store credit."
This is a bad business practice. After I find a way to get rid of these credits, I will not be giving them any more business.

I work within arms reach of this shop & always walk by there on lunch breaks so I figured to pop by last week & wow..the unwelcoming feeling you get from their staff when entering here is mind blowing considering their insanely high price points for products. A “luxury” aesthetic + no staff interaction + condescending staff responses≠ luxury retail experience
Sad considering how nice the store is designed.
Suggestion to management: If you want clients / customers / the Brooklyn community to continue giving your place business at the high prices you’re offering- reassess how your giving them a full customer experience with the people that you have on payroll

Both humored and blown away but the utter lack of customer service. My husband and I walked in, two staff were in the back at register. Didn’t say anything to us. I walked to the back and said hello then proceeded to ask some questions about the surfboards and surf spots in the area. They barely responded.
Such a shame that this sweet shop has stale employees!

This shop is cool and I’ve bought a board here in the past. Owner is super nice. But wow, I went in the other day and no one said hello to me. The shop was completely dead. Just my partner and I. Browsed through boards for 5 minutes then went to the front to look at the other boards. The 2 staff members were at the front desk and didn’t even acknowledge me. It got awkward and I decided to leave. This is the crazy part. On my way out, I said “thank you” in a nice voice as I always do and the lady at the front desk just looked at me without saying anything. SO PRETENTIOUS! And look, I never expect great customer service anywhere. But when you’re paying these markups, you want to feel good about it. It’s so surprising that they acted like this and it’s way different from the vibes at the old location. I love my pinder that I got from here but I’m definitely going to stop bragging about where I got it from.

Every big city with a surf scene needs that one surf shop that probably makes more money selling imported Japanese clothing than they do on actual surfboards. Pilgrim is that shop for NYC, and their presence on the scene has helped put New York a little more firmly on the surf world's map.Do I want to pay $300 for hand-sewn linen pants made by some kind of fisherman-painter who lives in a van? Not often. But sometimes you can get an end of season sale that makes the clothes more affordable. And they're certainly nice clothes. As for the surfboards... they're expensive as well. They're pretty much all hand-shaped and they cost about double the price of a big-name board from Channel Islands or Lost or whatever. But it's kinda nice having these expensive hipster boards circulating around the NYC area because it means those of us who aren't rich can grab them on the resale market when the original tech/finance bro buyers inevitably lose interest. And they're nice boards, for sure. Just note that not all the employees actually know that much about surfboards. They can all help you with the basics but beyond a certain point they'll need to refer you to one of the resident experts. Anyway: I give them five stars, because I only buy their stuff on sale or second-hand... but I'm glad to have it around.

Just had a very pleasant shopping experience here. Clothing was more than I am willing to pay, but somehow I scored some really comfy sandals and a great pair of sunglasses for a fair price. The store smelled great and salesperson remarkably devoid of 'tude. Check it out!
