Have surely tried "other" packed greens but this brand caught my eye with the promise of stays fresh longer... and it did. Found the romaine at Whole Foods and first thing I noticed is how nicely the leaves were placed in the package-- like they were resting on a cloud and packed by hands that care. For someone like me, looking for a convenient, not wasteful and not crazy priced way to enjoy fresh greens, this is it. Gotham Greens, you got me. Thanks. FYI: Hooked on the Romaine! Now it's time to branch out. I love it.

The best basil I have ever eaten outside of Rome, Italy. Fresh. Green. Fragrant. Clean. Delicious. Thank you, Gotham Greens. (photo is a salmon steak I made yesterday with Gotham Greens basil atop)

Recipe: Sustainably farmed or wild salmon 1/2 cup of bread crumbs 1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan 2 Tablespoons of Gotham Green's Pesto Steps: Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Place salmon on EVOO greased pan Spoon 2 tablespoons of Gotham Green's Pesto onto the salmon Mix your Parmesan & breadcrumbs into a mixture & gently press onto the salmon Bake salmon in the oven for 12-15 minutes until medium rare Broil on high for 1 minute. You want to watch this carefully so the top is perfectly brown Story: Salmon is a staple in our home & one of my favorite foods. When curating this recipe, I wanted to keep the ingredients list down to a minimum for a quick & easy week night dinner OR an easily scalable entree for a dinner party. They key here is Gotham Green's Pesto - Gotham Greens is a sustainable & global pioneer of of urban agriculture. They are based in NYC & produce local herbs & veggies year round in their greenhouse. What I love the most about Gotham Greens is that compared to conventional farms, Gotham Greens uses 95% less water and 97% less land than most farmers. Because they use less space to grow, they are protecting biodiversity of the our ecosystem & leave no negative impact on precious soil. Additionally, their ability to leverage 95% less water through hydroponics (the most water-efficient form of agriculture) means that they have zero runoff. Gotham Greens mission is to cultivate fresh ingredients & reimagine how fresh, local food is grown. A sustainable mission I support, but they also yield a tasty product. SUCH good greens and dressings! I love their pesto and green goddess dressing. Always go out of my way to get their products - the whole farm is a sight to see as well.

I attended a free Saturday morning tour (booked via Eventbrite) of Gotham Greens. Although we could not enter the greenhouse (to keep the environment sterile) we did have a good view of the crops and hydroponic system from the observation deck. The tour guide did a great job of explaining the greenhouse set up and the history of the company. It was interesting to learn that washing the greens from here was not necessary since no dirt is used in the growing process and the environment is controlled. We got to taste some of the greens and pesto made from the basil grown there. One of the greens was a new romaine lettuce variety that they didn't release yet. Butter lettuce and a iceberg lettuce were also available for tasting. All tasted fresh and overall seemed slightly more delicate than greens from elsewhere. We tried classic pesto, spicy pesto and vegan pesto (classic minus the cheese). I liked the spicy one the most as I am a fan of spicy foods. You taste the spiciness toward the end and the pesto in the beginning. The vegan pesto is lighter and the olive oil flavors are more prevalent in there compared to the classic pesto making it a good choice for a salad dressing. At the end of the tour we got to take home two clamshells of greens and some seedlings that were in the hydroponic starting material, but could be planted into dirt later on. It's located on the roof of the Whole Foods in Gowanus, although they are a separate company from Whole Foods. It's cool that the greens you buy downstairs was grown right above. Super local!

Best lettuce ever and grown right in NYC. I've tried many varieties and have never been disappointed.
