Perhaps the best comic book shop in the USA for the alternative minded. The world would be a less interesting place without it…..

Desert Island is truly an oasis for Indie/art comics in New York City. You can tell that the owner is passionate about curating the shop. It’s an incredible place to discover something interesting and to be inspired. There’s a great children’s section for young readers. They produce their own free newspaper format comic as well that’s always filled incredible content.

What a horrifying store owner. Believe the dozens of people when they say they've had racist, horrifying, demeaning, rude, and aggressive interactions with this middle aged incel. As a woman and potential customer, i was shocked to be treated the way I was, and simply for asking a question about who an artist was. When i left, I had a feeling he'd (in true incel stereotype comic book owner manner) would turn to the internet and speak about our interaction, as though he was in the right. boy was i right! he made an instagram story about me, called me a yuppie manhattan customer (im a neighbor and local, 10 years lol, and not a customer, will never be one after this) and called my boyfriend, also a local, a "trophy boyfriend". imagine being that low, embarassing, entitled, cocky, and delusional? as a middle aged comic store owner that looks like a shitty urban outfitters? dont shop here. don't feed into this guys delusions. googled him, he teaches at nyu? emailing them next, as an alum. really, really, theres cute stores all over nyc. dont go to one where this guy some how gets to live out his adult bully fantasies, he was clearly builled as a loser tween. posting stories about ur customers!! girl u should be embarassed. dont work in service or with humans if this is your life. every day you must have aggressive outbursts with potential customers turned- non patrons. waiting for a public apology my little middle aged incel king!

Such a unique spot, with a really knowledgeable staff. They have beautiful artistic graphic novels, not just typical comic books. Plus zines and other printed materials. Go check it out!

The comic book selection is top shelf but the owner is mental. If you're looking for a selection of independent euro-centric comics, this place is a treasure. If you've ever seen the Simpsons and understood the charicature of the comic book store owner, this owner pretty much falls in line with that. He's eccentric but angry and petulant and that sucks but it's Brooklyn.

This is the kind of comics shop I hope to find everytime that I walk into a comics shop. Everything weird, experimental, and virtuoso in the world of comics is sold here.

It is my top #1 place for an outstanding and wide selection of comic books. I was recommended to this store as a quick check-in, which resulted in me staying there till it got dark. The lady inside was so very lovely and very helpful. I was looking for a certain type of book to read with my husband and I was such a great amount of books to pick from. When she found something, she would pull it out and let me read it. The whole experience was great; it was so much fun.

I've been here a few times throughout the years. I love this creative comic book store. I hesitate to call it that because it's more than that. It's not your average comic book store. It has comic books from other countries and some very interesting books. It also has Zines. The decor and vibe is great. Even the outside is different. It retains signage from a previous store, which was apparently a Bakery. Gabe, the owner, is super knowledgeable, helpful and very nice. I hope this place stays around for many, many more years.

A must stop if you’re in search of comics, zines, prints, etc.Gabriel is an incredible shop owner with extensive knowledge and love for art. He has an incredible selection of local artists as well as larger publications. His ethos of allowing anyone who has the courage to allow themselves to be seen is incredible and important to cultivating a safe space for artists.Desert Island is more than just a comic shop. It’s evident that it’s also a hub for new talent finding their footing as well as old talent continuing to thrive. Thanks for having us in our first trip to NY. It was great being able to speak with you about that huge Broadley print. I haven’t gotten it out of my head and my Desert Island T-shirt is a new fav!

This store is so important to my experience of the neighborhood I've lived in for 20+ years. A small but tightly stocked store that's fun to browse for myself, my kid, or when I need to get someone a gift. I enjoy my chats with the owner as well and I like how he features artists in cool window displays, too. Would hate to lose it!
