I visited the Batavia animal shelter, also known as Volunteer for Animals, a few months ago and had a deeply disappointing experience. Initially, I brought home a dog but had to return him because his behavior was unmanageable despite my best efforts at training. I then expressed interest in adopting a German Shepherd, who was older and had more training. However, the sheriff, who also serves as the animal control officer, refused to let me take him home, claiming to be "looking out for the animals."
If she was truly looking out for the animals, why did she react negatively when I returned an unmanageable dog? The shelter actually encourages you to bring dogs back if things do not work out. Despite trying everything I could, the dog I got from them was so out of control that I needed to get a different one.
Additionally, the shelter uses choke collars on their dogs, which I find concerning. During a walk to test how a dog would do, they had me walk a dog known to dislike other dogs while another dog was brought close. The dog I was walking began to choke due to the choke collar, and I was unfairly blamed for the situation. What did they expect to happen when a dog pulls on a choke collar?
Frustrated, I went to Lollipop Farm in Rochester, and the difference was astounding. Lollipop Farm is a much better facility with better workers who truly care for the animals. They don't use choke collars; instead, they use full harnesses and normal collars, which are much safer and more humane. They genuinely look out for the dogs and animals in general, unlike the staff at the Batavia animal shelter.
If you want your forever friend, go to Lollipop Farm. Thanks to them, I found my forever friend, and he found his forever home. I would never recommend the Batavia animal shelter. Those dogs deserve better care and would be much better off at Lollipop Farm.

I got a kitten from them last August and she is the sweetest thing ever. The adoption was smooth and I had no complaints. The foster was really nice and sent pictures of Ava Darling (used to be Larissa) every week since she had a hard time gaining weight to get spayed. I highly recommend this shelter.

Catherine was extremely rude and took some information and twisted it so she did not have to do her job. Very bad experience. I'm sure other people have had good luck here, but my experience was awful. Catherine escalated to talk over me and would not let me speak, and told me to go somewhere else.

Went in to this place looking for a dog on Saturday and was introduced to a dog me and my fiance had our heart set on went in today to a totally different story and a bunch of rude people who volunteer there we will not be going back and I suggest others to be very cautious when dealing with this place because you get one answer one day and another one another day

Love what they do for animals and all the staff is very friendly and professional. It’s where I adopted my kitty. Would always recommend looking into a animal shelter before a public seller cause loving animals come from shelters too!!

I couldn’t be more happy with the cat (dog) I rescued. He greets us at the door, follows us from room to room, knows his hours for eats and treats and stands guard when we are in the bathroom. He makes me laugh everyday.

Very nice, concerned staff and volunteers. Made sure that my kitties and I were a good match before we went home.

If you want to find homes for animals volunteers should not be so judgemental. Help animals find homes. I am not the only person who has this opinion might be one of the only who will post the truth.
