If you are like me, you'll eat and drink too much in Taos. A great remedy is to show up for the group tennis workouts at Quail Ridge. Tennis pro Curt will get you going, and you might learn a thing or two. Don't be shy, most all attendees are from out of town.

My wife and I are 3.5 level club players at Central Texas Athletic Club and past members of Trinity University AC in San Antonio. We play a few days a week and during vacations. We always travel with racquets. I first played Quail Ridge on a warm winter day roughly 10 years ago. I'm thrilled that the courts continue to be maintained well. This has proven not to be the case at many of the courts that have been built at ski areas. They are often simply a marketing afterthought that proves to be a frustrating waste of time for a serous player.Key to the success at Quail Ridge is not just the careful planning of the builders, but the attentiveness of the pros on the staff. There is a cultural aspect at work here. Simply put, they "speak tennis". Windscreens are good, nets are new, and the hard court surface was free of dust from the surrounding high Mesa when we recently played - midweek in late May 2021.The challenge in high altitude play is, first and foremost, the wind, however, the courts are set in a slight hollow and further protected from a W or SW wind (the prevalent good weather direction) by low and tastefully designed adobe style condo units. It is still advisable to show up early in the morning, however, as winds throughout the region tend to get more established in the afternoon.I would be remiss in my review if I did not point out the court's one flaw - and it is one that the owners have been trying to cope with for years. These are not cheap composition courts with a painted surface. These are expensive high end courts with a flexible acrylic vinyl underlayment that makes them very easy on the feet. There are no cracks and the surface is superb - but one occasionally comes across zones where the surface has separated from the base. There are no bubbles ... just a slight sense of softness. This condition existed ten years ago but it was not so much of a concern that it caused me not to come back. Play the courts as if you were on clay. Expect occasional variance in ball bounce. These are still the best courts south of Aspen.

This is like an oasis for tennis players in northern New Mexico. They have ten recently-resurfaced courts in a very scenic setting. They are also highly-rated in the nation for their ability to provide competition for players of all abilities. Kurt is the head pro and owner of this facility who can also rent you a courtside condo. We were visiting Taos to see the tourist sites, but were pleasantly surprised to be able to get in some enjoyable tennis. We would like to go back for a week-long tennis vacation.
