Sad that the executive director is keeping all the money

The folks at this shelter clearly care very much about both the emotional and physical well-being of the animals they're responsible for. Chris introduced us to some of the cats we would be compatible with and helped us find the cat we would be the best family for. I am really impressed with how clean and content all of their cats seemed. And I am really happy with the animal they set us up with.
We've had great experiences adopting from them before and I'm glad we chose to go back.

This is a true rescue and they really do care about animals. They could not take an older dog that belongs to a friend who can no longer keep him due to over crowdedness, but Carin went out of her way to find him a foster home for us and we are SO appreciate of that. Just genuinely good people. We plan to make a donation to the shelter for helping us rehome Max. Thank you Stray Hearts! You are the best.

They complain they have too many dogs then make it close to impossible to actually adopt a dog. I swear it's easier buying a car with money I don't have than it is to adopt a dog here.

Update: Stray Hearts is in a major shake up at the moment (late August 2023) - we will have to see what comes out of it. Everything I wrote below in glowing terms may or may not be true in future. We will see. There is a "change of direction" planned.Former Post: As an empath I have always found animal shelters hard to bear energetically (as well as ethically), but Stray Hearts is a wonderful exception. If you want an animal friend or two, I can tell you without hesitation, go there! The people are uniformly positive, the place is clean, and the animals are cared for in a positive and warm way I have never seen at other shelters. The staff and volunteers work with the dogs to de-stress them and train them.Leading edge behavioral methods are used, and their dog behaviorist, DeLinda is marvelous. Their current vet, Heather Fox, is also doing a wonderful job. Stray Hearts recently won a national award contest for the fantastic job they are doing (it was sponsored by a major pet supply chain). They get so many dogs, they can always use more volunteers to do calming, walking, or training, so if you might enjoy some dog time while making a difference in their lives, please consider volunteering. The cats can always use extra attention too, if cats are more your thing. Their training program for volunteers is top notch. As you may know, the term "no-kill" shelter is much misused these days - some shelters turn down a lot of animals, dooming them to death or even abandonment, in order to claim they are "no-kill."Stray Hearts is what I would call a low-kill shelter in that it takes dogs and cats as long as it has room, and never puts an animal down unless absolutely necessary. They are also very transparent about their numbers.I see so many wonderful dogs and cats at Stray Hearts who deserve families and would be a great blessing to anyone. If you need or want a devoted friend, go to Stray Hearts to find them. There are so many more loving and mannerly animals than available homes at this point, and being stuck in a shelter for years is not an ideal life for a sweet animal. So if you have not neutered or spayed your pet(s) or local ferals, please look into the various free or low-cost spay-neuter programs in the community. Even if your animal is already pregnant, there is the Last Litter program, in which the kittens or puppies are placed into homes (at the right age, of course) and the mother fixed for you.If you know of feral cats having litters (many such kittens are eaten by wild animals), please check out Taos Feral Feline Friends. TFFF will help trap them, spay/neuter them, and return them to their locations to live out their lives as barn cats. Please do all you can to reduce the population of starving and unwanted animals. Thank you.

Now I’m going to start off by saying I have never adopted an animal from the shelter but my spouse was an employee there and he is a hardworking man who is honest and reliable. But it has been over three weeks and he still has not received his paycheck, it’s very disheartening that he would go to work with a passion to help these animals and a ethnic to make an honest days wage and these people seem like they do not care weather he gets it or not. The staff at Stray Hearts Animal Shelter are amazing! From the kennel techs, trainers, medical staff, to shelter manager. We visited the shelter to view a very shy dog. The staff set us up to visit with him three separate days and spent several hours with us so we could get to know the pup and have him meet our dog. We ended up adopting the shy pup while on vacation in Taos. The staff members worked with us to get our application in and approved during a holiday weekend so we could take our new pup home. Even after we got home the shelter employees reached out to us multiple times to check on our pup and us. The staff members truly care so much about the animals in the shelter, its owners, and the town. Highly recommend! They do amazing work for strays and animals needing medical attention.
