I can't say enough of my grandfather and my parents for making this store the #1 place in Santa Fe to visit! All your basic essentials are available, but your best item to purchase is their famous red or green tamales, which are to die for.

We always enjoy the family, the great atmosphere and of course Green Chicken and Red Pork Tamales. Worth the walk up Acequia Madre to absorb the flora, running water and old houses to linger and drink in history. Wait, What isn't this a food review?

I came in on a cold snowy but sunny morning. I think I met Johnnie and he was really friendly and helpful. The store had corner store basics and a few extras like coffee and tamales. Really helpful in a pinch.

This little store is tucked between million dollar homes in what the locals call the "Historical Inner East Side" of Santa Fe. We go there every October to buy frozen tamales to bring home. They sell them in sealed packs of a dozen and you can choose either green (chicken) or red (pork). If you are flying home with a cooler of roasted Hatch or Socorro chile the airlines don't permit you to have ice in the cooler. So I use a few packages of frozen tamales from Johnnie's as my "ice" to keep the chile cold. It has worked perfectly for 20+ years in a row.

Johnnies is a true old time convenience store. It is hard to find tucked in a neighborhood, but worth the effort. Johnnie's daughter-in-law was keeping the shop. She said it takes all of his 8 kids and grandchildren to do what he once did by himself. We bought tamales to bring home. A fun experience.i
