111 W Main St, Farmington“I need to not only shout from the hilltops what a GREAT place the Dusty Attic is to explore but I also feel the need to also defend the store in response to the not-so-kind low rating reviews on here...I am visiting Farmington for work for 2 weeks, and prior to my arrival had looked up a couple of videos about the town on Youtube. One video brushed past a case with a VERY SPECIAL, VERY difficult to find 1930s vintage Orphan Annie doll, that I had been wanting for the better part of a decade. It was my MISSION to get to the Dusty Attic as soon as I possibly could!I have a weird superstition in that I never want to immediately ask the store personnel if they have Orphan Annie memorabilia, because I want to "find" it on my own.So I explored all 3 floors of the Dusty Attic with the quiet but resolute mission mind of a explorer discovering a new location filled with artifacts. It was COMPLETELY an adventure!Right away I saw an old Honeymooners pin that caught my eye, then a needlepoint of a wired hair fox terrier (our family's choice breed), a Shirley Temple doll in pristine condition with her curls still in a hair net, dressed in her Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm costume, as well as a nice storybook for young adults that I planned on getting for a family member.I know another customer wrote in her review that she felt targeted while in the store.... I need to speak to this:My family also ran a store (or 3), and they handled everything within, including security. Even so, my grandfather was bludgeoned over the head with a lead pipe TWICE-- which was the beginning of his early death. This occurred in Indianapolis years ago. More recently, I fled NYC, where all of our Upper West Side mom and pops stores had shuttered from the rampant theft and violence (as well as skyrocketing commercial real estate costs), and we residents literally lost everything except for the big box stores that had crept in, making our neighborhood the same as any in the USA-- no longer with the unique NYC richness and history. I am a white woman in my late 40s... I was immediately followed throughout the store... not obtrusively, in fact the various family members were kind and answered my questions, held my merchandise that I wanted to purchase.. but I was most definitely followed (like the other reviewer who felt it was a race issue). Here's my $.02 for what it's worth:The world has become such that family-owned businesses need to do what they can to survive... and if that means following their customers around to assure that their merchandise is not shoplifted or to assure the safety of their workers and the store... SO BE IT. I'd much rather be followed than lose a GEM such as this amazing store. And it is, TRULY AMAZING. From furniture to collectibles to books... they have very unique items and ALL are priced completely right, even reasonable! And my 1930s Orphan Annie doll? I wound up asking the owners, showing them the video that had been made a year ago-- panicking that someone else had scooped up my intended treasure... They kindly said that the "doll lady" who was the vendor for their dolls had since opened her own store on Main St down the road... I found it there-- so it was a day of discovery for not just one store but two (that review will follow this one!). And an AMAZING welcome to this lovely town!”

“A Beautiful Mess is a fantastic shop. The store is clean, and beautifully decorated. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Their products are great and the pricing is surprisingly affordable! Another great feature is that they offer delivery, which is very useful if you don’t have access to a truck. The delivery was timely, professional, and they even placed, setup, and cleaned up afterwards! This place is a real gem here in Farmington.”
