This is a no frills Portuguese Grocery Store that sells the best black olives and Egg Custart Pastry that money can buy. They also sell coffee and other Portuguese sweets.

In the sleepy little town of South River, who knew that you could find a treasure trove of authentic Portuguese restaurants, cafes, and bakeries. Cavaco Supermarket is known in town as the go-to Portuguese deli, grocery, and bakery. The shelves are even stocked with products imported from Portugal. On the front counter, you'll find a variety of fresh baked breads, codfish fritters and turnovers, pastries, as well as of course espresso. In addition, they are a churrasqueria and offer delicious BBQ chicken, served in a giant tray over rice and fries. Their pastries, such as their bola de berlim and pastel de nata I'm not too much of a fan of compared to other spots in town, but their chicken and codfish fritter was delicious and their fries are even fresh cut. Take a look at their various imported goods and merchandise and you'll certainly be surprised!

There is an undiscovered collection of businesses that serve the Portuguese community in South Rivers. (And a different collection for the Mexican community but that's a review for another day) And Cavaco's Supermarket is one of these. And what a gem it is. At first you might think the store owners are unfriendly but they are not. They just speak very little English. And if you just try a little bit they are so warm and welcoming. And their food is delicious and different. I have a photo of what the store owner was calling codfish, which I was sure was something else but it wasn't. It was a delicious oniony pancake/fritter with chunks of fish in it (Thanks Brendan B for letting me know they are Pataniscas and Pataniscas de Bacalhau in particular!) I also bought a fried (croquette ?) with savory chicken inside. It was the perfect mix of crisp and chewy outside and spiced chicken inside! I also had a delicious cappuccino (Every cappuccino I have had in South River is delicious) Loving my newly discovered secret place, South River, NJ. But Shhhhh don't tell anybody! I like having it all to myself!
