As stated in previous reviews, U-Brew is a home brew supplies store located above the Gaslight Pub. They have ample supplies and quality products but where they really shine is the service! I have had long conversations with multiple brewers about different techniques, styles of beer, etc. They are there to help you throughout the process, whether you are a beginner or advanced brewer.Call in advance to place your order and Dan will assemble everything for you and have it ready to go. He will even crush the grains for you, which helps a lot if you don't have a mill of your own.

I had to "cheat" on my local brewery store after visiting them only to discover they were closed due to maintenance for that particular day. So we headed out to U-Brew Homebrewing supplies.I remembered U-Brew after visiting Gaslight Brewery (read my review for them) and noticed their faint U-Brew supplies sign on the 2nd floor window. As I suspected, both business are connected.U-Brew's "official" website is a sub-page of Gaslight Brewery's website. There is no real-time catalog, photos, or online shopping. Only a brief description of U-Brew and 3 links to 3 PDFs: a decent generic 2 page guide on getting started with homebrewing, a generic recipe called "Dragon Brew," and a 10 page catalog of the items they carry. The PDF "catalog" is simply a B/W text-only list of the items they carry with prices per item or ounce. Definitely not for the beginner. There are no standard beer "kits" neither. However, all the bare essentials are on the list.Although there are no standard beer extract "kits" and the fact that they have all the bare essentials, U-Brew will create a beer kit for you and can even custom create a kit for larger batches (10 gal., 20 gal., and up) - something not found on the market. For us, we decided to go with an American Pale Ale. After the gentleman walked upstairs to cut a kit together from their collection of 50+ grains and other stocked essentials, we then had a beer "kit" without a retail box. All of the ingredients in our kit were premium items, from the malts down to the live Wyeast yeast. We asked for a fermenting bucket and he gave us a tall, quality bucket with grommeted lid and lid gasket (some sell buckets with lid gasket). Cost for everything: about $52 bucks. This is NOT a retail store. You can't walk in to browse goods like at other brewery shops. It also doesn't have its own official entrance; we entered Gaslight Brewery and the gentleman walked up a flight of steps by the bar and pub tables to work his magic while we waited at the bar. The only minor annoyance is that we didn't have 'specific' instructions for our kit. For example, when buying beer kits, they'll have a recipe guide that will tell you how long to ferment, if dry hopping is required, and specific gravity unique to the type of beer within the kit. He gave us a printed copy of the generic "Dragon Brew" recipe. In fairness, the generic recipe will cover all basic steps for ales and hoppy beers. If you are a beginner, fear not. After brewing a few batches of beers from kits, you'll notice the essentials (hops, malts, yeast, grains) and practically similar brewing/fermenting processes for (most) common beers. Eventually, you'll break away from kits and explore creating new (and larger) brews.I don't know why this place doesn't allow you to go inside. It seems that it would hurt their business as it masks them with mystery. However, when speaking with the gentleman he alerted me that there are meetings of local homebrewers (forgot if it was weekly or monthly) and there's a small membership fee. Perhaps these are the times when brewers get to enter the actual U-Brew store/floor. What's important to potential customers, is that they have quality essentials for practically all brewing needs.Despite it's quiet, closed appearance, and lack of a main entrance, this place is active for business. My personal recommendation is to call ahead to make sure someone is there, which is generally the bartender/brewmaster of all the delicious crafted beers served at Gaslight. If you are a beginner, simply arrive with an idea of the type of beer you'd like to create and he'll create it for you. I'll keep revisiting this place as the crafted brews in Gaslight Brewery are amazing and all essentials are carried. The gentleman filled my ears with wisdom when I asked a few brewing questions and even shook my hand. Whenever you find a brewery with all of their beers batting home runs on your

some friend and I tried to get a table, we were told that the dinning room required that we remove our hat's, strange, we pointed to the people that had on their baseball caps, we were told , they were not eating, just sitting at the table, we turned around and walked out, we have been coming there for years, great beer, but that was the last time

U Brew offers all the ingredients a homebrewer will ever need, whether making an all-grain mash or brewing from a kit using make extract. The owner can help suggest hop varietals or grain blends, which is great for beginners. Located on the second floor of the Gaslight Brewery and Restaurant, U Brew doesn't resemble a traditional retail location, although that's a plus because the lower overhead is reflected in the reasonable prices. Your best bet is to order beforehand and pick up your supplies anytime the bar is open. Good stuff!

They had the liquid yeast that I wanted. But you can't actually walk in and see the ingredients/equipment, and the shop owner wasn't particularly nice or friendly.
