I traveled over an hour on 9/20/23 (1pm appt) to give Madison Reed's ammonia-free products a try, however I will not be going back. Looking at the photos of the color options, the colorist and I chose Modena Brown - 5.5NNN. A nice darkish brown color, supposedly.... but my hair came out black. I have very long hair and my very ends were sooooo black. In addition, my root coverage was so-so. Even after 2 months of washings, still blackish. Though the ladies at the Shrewsbury location are very nice and accommodating, I still need to give the review only 1 star. If management would like to contact me directly for more details, I'll be happy to share my frustrations of my experience there regarding the hair dye application and the washing. ( I just went to a local salon and the owner is working with me to slowly adjust my color back to a dark brown).UPDATED on 11/25/23 - the company reached out to me, very professional, for additional information. I appreciate that they refunded the charge without me asking. I did share my thoughts on what went wrong. I would give the company itself 5 stars but for the purposes of this review, I still need to stick with the 1 star because I'm rating my initial experience of 9/20/23.

this particular Madison Reed location has been understaffed since the day that it opened in May of 2022 and nothing is being done in order to rectify this situation. Now that there are more clients it is impossible to get an appointment and even more impossible if you have to reschedule. I am a rewards member and I find it disturbing that I can't get an appointment and my membership is not able to be utilized. I have contacted corporate too many times to count and still nothing is being done in order to resolve this situation.Service: Hair coloring

I have been a member since this particular location opened and there was an issue from the very beginning with short staffing and over a year and a half later this continues to be an issue. It is disappointing and frustrating not being able to get an appointment nor reschedule for another time. I have spent countless hours on the phone and have reported this situation too many times to count with management who have done nothing to rectify this situation as far as I'm concerned.

I wish I had read the reviews, before my appt. because I had a similar experience as Lisa G. I had gone in after getting highlights for a root touch up and to tone down the copper in my hair. I came out with very dark hair that covered up the highlights. I have an appt coming up for another root touch up and add'l highlights framing the face. However, I am on the fence as to whether I should keep it? I really want to give them another chance because I love the concept, location, and colorist.I'm glad I gave them another chance to resolve this. Your customer service hair specialists do a commendable job of helping to understand your hair needs and how to address it.Their bond product is a great, I noticed a difference in my hair after only a few applications.Thank you,TamaraServices: Gloss or Glaze

I went to the Shrewsbury NJ location as I was looking to get my hair colored. The colorist right away said that coloring was not the way to go that she was going to give me partial highlights instead. I initially thought this was strange since my hair needs coloring and I can decide on highlights later because of my roots. But I didn't want to argue with her so we went with it. My gut feeling is that she wasn't comfortable in coloring a full head of hair, that foiling was easier and faster for her. I picked up on that. Needless to say my hair came out darker than ever and I only have a few strands of highlights that you can't even notice. I paid $225.00 for this service and am so disappointed. You really need to get more experienced colorists in this beautiful salon. These two girls there are not providing an honest service. I would like to be reimbursed or at least partially reimbursed for this terrible service, thank you, Jacqueline Pierce

I love going to MR in Shrewsbury however the staff turn over is awful. Gloria is doing an amazing job and was there by herself today and yet still provided excellent service. I think it’s unsafe for an employee to be alone. I understand costs have to be controlled but it’s ridiculous for her to be alone.

i have been to the Color Bar 4 times to have my roots done. The colorists are always pleasant and attentive. Two out of the four times, the color has been left to sit on my hair for over an hour (I was told it was going to be left on 35-45 minutes). Both times it is difficult to put total blame on the colorist. One time the colorist was on the phone with someone and was unable to end the call. The second time, a walk-in who decided to schedule a last minute color appointment was taken and the person spent about 20 minutes relaying her hair color history and unhappiness with her hair color selections. In both instances I had to wait for the colorist to finish with these people before finishing with my processing, and shampooing out my hair color.Bottom line for me is, the company needs to do something to handle these situations. Either have a receptionist or colorist that is responsible for answering questions. Colorists working with clients should be able to focus on these clients and not being forced to take calls or answer customer questions.

I have shopped at the Grove in Shrewsberry for a few years and they recently put a Madison Reed salon in the grove. I have heard great reviews about their hair color products and have been wanting to get my hair colored to a lighter color for some time. I have sat brown hair when selecting the color I wanted the website wouldn't let me select anything but the lightest brown they had and my intention was to color my whole hair lighter as I have had very little success with highlights on the past. So they begin to prep me for color before I even speak to the colorist so I stopped them until I could be assured that I would get the results I wanted. I reviewed with Jackie what I wanted and even showed her a picture of myself in a previous shade I liked. She talked me out of coloring my entire hair and said that partial highlights would get me the effect I was looking for. I let her know that I have had highlights before and they do not show up in my dark hair which is why I wanted my full hair colored and to very light brown color. Again she said she has been doing highlights for a long time and just that morning had another woman with my color hair come in for light highlights and it came out beautifully. I let her know that as long as my hair would show up significantly lighter that she was the expert and I would follow her lead. Well three hours later my hair looked fat brown with tiny strips of some lighter hair but frankly i looked the same and still had some of my Grey hair showing around my ears. Also the woman who did my blow out was clearly new and I have very long hair it took another 20 mins for my blow dry and I had to ask to please go a little faster. So 3 1/2 hours later and $300 and I looked the same. I made it clear I was not happy with the results no one cared - never going there again!!Update Madison Reed contacted me after this review and refunded me completely for the service. I was made whole and happy with the resolution.

I was desperate to get my grays colored, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to try them out. The colorist does not know how to explain the advantages of the Madison Reed color nor how to pick the color or timing on; based on listening to my request. She completely refused to modify her ways to make me comfortable. The Shampoo experience was a horror. I left without the Blowdry. Got home reshampooed and after drying what was my beautiful 3 dimensional brown color became darkened and opaque. I now have black hair. I am very upset. I had no desire or request to change the level or depth of my color only to cover grays and tone the redness. Don't go there with these two women who are running the place, right now. I will reach out to corporate office to further describe my experience. I don't know what to do with my dark hair.Services: Blowdry

Been there 3 times now for a root touch up. Weird how when you walk in, there’s no person to greet you and check you in. You just stand there waiting until one of the colorists are available.

Stylists seem to be in a rush. Not very attentive and kept trying to upsell services.
