It took me a little while to write this review because I debated whether or not it was worth it. Here’s my experience with Brothers Hardware Plumbing & Heating.
I placed an order on Friday night for Black Gold Peat Moss (3.8 Cu Ft) as their website showed they had 10+ bags in stock. This was the only local store that carried it, so I scheduled my landscaper for the next day and placed the order. On Saturday morning, I received an email saying my order was ready for pickup. I informed my landscaper and headed to the store.
When I arrived, I gave them my order number and received my receipt. As they were processing my order, I noticed three bags of peat moss by the door, but they were not Black Gold—they were a different brand called Berger. I asked if these were mine, and they confirmed they were. I mentioned that I ordered Black Gold, and the employee said they had run out of Black Gold and figured they’d just give me Berger instead, adding, “Peat moss is peat moss.” While I agree that peat moss is peat moss, the Black Gold I ordered was priced at $32.99, and the Berger brand they were giving me was only $23.76. I asked if they could adjust the price since the product was cheaper, but they said no.
To be fair, they did offer to cancel the order, but at that point, I already had workers at my house expecting the peat moss, so I decided to take it. Honestly, this wouldn’t have been a big deal if they had just informed me in advance. Instead, they advertised a more expensive brand online, gave me a cheaper product for the same price, and didn’t notify me beforehand. That felt dishonest. If the product was out of stock, they should have canceled the order or called to let me know instead of trying to substitute it without saying anything.
Now, as far as the Berger peat moss itself, it’s quite different from Black Gold. The Berger product has more chunks of debris, which means you spend more time removing that and, in the end, you get less square footage per cubic foot of product. This added a lot of unnecessary work and reduced the coverage I was expecting based on my order.
In the end, I called Ace Hardware support, and they were able to reimburse me the difference. This review is just a heads-up—if you order from here, double-check the product and make sure they don’t try to sell you a more expensive item while giving you a cheaper version.

Worst customer service ever. I am a National Sales Manager for a building materials company and this is the worst I’ve seen in a long time .First, their websites stocks and prices are not accurate, and their lead-times neither.Second, if you are planning on sending someone to pick-up you must add a person when checking out and if you don’t do it at that time, when they get there, they will be FORCED to cancel the order and make the person over there (your labor) pay and show their ID. They literally cancelled the order without giving a heads-up when I let them know I would call the HQ’s Customer Service.Last but not least, the arrogance of the manager (owner) of this location is stunning. He proofed me over and over how I was wrong and he was right. Well, you may be right but you lost a new customer Trade account . This was my First and Last purchase ever. When they put this in the van they threw it like a garbage bag (not care at all) plus they don’t do refunds so be advised to videotape anything you buy when you unpack it.I’m going back to buy from Home Depot again everything no matter the price difference. The 1h lost in this and the stress is not worth it.

Bad customer service. Bad attitude, arrogant front desk.I'm not the only one who left 1 star reviews for this business , please look at the other 1 star reviews , it's same issue, bad attitude.This is first store in all of New Jersey I received a hasty attitude and reply. I deal with many paint suppliers , different brands , all over New Jersey and i never had this type of encounter .This store should really consider reflecting on themselves why they are business in the 1st place.

I have had it, with this store. They keep Bankers' Hours, and are generally surly. They have a few nice, and helpful people, but this is the exception, not the rule. The last straw, was this evening. They have a "posted" closing time, of 6PM, Friday Evening. As I approached the store, at about 5:40, an employee was extending the parking lot chain, across the parking lot. He yelled at Me, "We're Closed!. I kept walking toward the door, to check the hours, and again, He Yelled, at Me, "We're closed! I checked the door, to verify the closing time, and turned around, to leave. I did tell him, and I am very serious, about this; as I left; that, when You "post" hours, that You're open, until 6, You STAY Open, until 6. I was brought up, to believe "The Customer, is always right". If someone comes in the door, at 5:59, You allow them, a reasonable amount of time, say 10 minutes, to accomplish what they intended to do, ""ring" them up, then close. Apparently, no more.

Tl;Dr - Rude staff, they don't take returns if the product is used.The store has a nice mom & pop style feel, however, it doesn't work out like one. The staff are rude and speak down to you. I've shopped here twice, and both times had a similar experience with 2 separate members of the family.They stock a lot of products, however, the price is the same if not more expensive than buying from a competitor or online.I purchased a torch and used an estimated 1/4th of the mapp gas tank. I went in for a return as the provided btu output wasn't enough for my needs. I even offered to pay for another mapp gas tank as I used a bit of it. I was met with "Why would I take back used products?"I understand not taking refunds, however, I felt disrespected and made to feel like an idiot.I will not be shopping here again. You're not saving money and you're providing a livelihood for rude people. I'll have to find another hardware store. I'd recommend you do too.
