Fooled by the good reviews, I serviced my car there for a period of time, here's a summary of why I recommend avoiding this shop. They'll overcharge you for labor, even if you tell them exactly what the problem is and which part is causing it they'll still spend half a day looking for the problem, and the time it takes to fix it is also inflated, so there's no small jobs at Gil's, even if the fix is simple you're going to be overpaying as if you are taking the engine apart. And if you think that it's because they are thorough, think again, many times I had to go back several times to address the same problem, and paid for all the misdiagnosed fixes of course. Also watch out for their carelessness, one time they left the spare tire unsecured under the vehicle and it almost caused an accident had I not caught it in time, another time they forgot to put back some of the nuts on the wheel but I caught it before leaving, and be ready to have your interior greased and smudged with dirt and rust and scratched and dented, one time I got the car back with scratches and muddy boot marks over the door speaker where the mechanic kicked the door open, and some weird gunk all over the seats. After they overcharge you they are going to add exorbitant markups to the price of the parts. After all of that they may still double charge you, so inspect the payment thoroughly before paying, because once you pay it's going to be like pulling teeth to get your money back, so good luck with that. My advice is to go find a good mechanic's shop somewhere else.
*edit/update:
I just came back from the Lexus dealership after spending $3000+ because I had to redo the timing belt work done at Gil’s after 40k miles plus some damages that were caused by improper installation of the parts by Gil’s according to the dealership. They tell me that it could have caused catastrophic damage to my engine, and that it was due to the previous mechanic’s faulty installation of the camshaft pulley which almost completely came off because it wasn’t tightened properly when the timing belt was done. I had paid $2000+ for the timing belt replacement originally at Gil’s. Anyway I hope this doesn’t happen to you when you go to Gil’s Auto repair, but I wouldn’t chance it if I were you.
**edit/my response the business’s reply below:
First of all thanks for the ad hominem, and I don’t know what my living in Paterson had to do with anything, do you prefer only rich people from ridgewood who don’t care how much money they overpaid? When I first went to the dealership with the codes indicating faulty timing in the engine, they said there was no way it was related to the timing belt when I told them it was 40k miles old, without knowing who you are, so I don’t think they had anything against you, they just didn’t expect this level of incompetence, but they were soon shocked, I asked if there was any other way this could happen, but they assured me that an improper installation was the only possible cause. You know this is not the first part that failed prematurely after you worked on it, many other parts I had to redo but I always chucked it to bad luck, for example last night when I was going through the receipts I got from you in preparation for filing a BBB complaint, I noticed how many times you charged me for investigating the noise coming from the wheel without figuring out the cause, I must have paid about $800 before you figured out it was the parking brake component in one of the wheels, that same one I had to replace again in a year, whoever heard of a parking brake failing a year after installation only in one wheel? why no other wheels failed other than the one you worked on? The decent thing would be to subtract 40% of what I originally paid you for the timing belt from $3284, which is how much I paid the dealership to redo the job correctly plus replace all the damages caused by your improper installation, and refund me if you were an honest business owner. And I can give you

Great professional experience. Brought it in as AAA indicated busted alternator. They tested and identified it was the battery. Quick turnaround.

After taking our son’s vehicle to a local dealership we decided to get a second opinion. I had read great reviews about Gil’s and am happy to say they were correct. Reasonable prices, great communication and turnaround. Highly recommend.
