I'm very disappointed in their lack of concern for a dog I reported to them on Wednesday 6/28. I went to them and explained to them that a dog had been abandoned just hours earlier, not 10 minutes from their location. They did the whole "sad face ? " " oh my goodness thing" they even said that they had room, but couldn't take it in. I told them it was a young female medium sized dog that was super friendly. As soon as I said she might be a pit/mix, right away " we can't take it, it's unadoptable" now I've been right around the corner from this place for 10 years and I've seen plenty of pit/mix dogs at their shelter. They wouldn't even go get the dog then decide what's best for her. It was pretty much " here's a couple phone numbers you can try, good luck". This is sad, to know there was room for this dog at this shelter and they did nothing, and didn't even show interest in helping her. But they will have no problem sending me information in the mail for donations! I've donated monetary, I've donated food and other supplies over the years. NO MORE!!!! This poor dog had the personality and disposition to get adopted and enjoy life. It would have been nice to see the Salem County Humane Society "No Kill Shelter" move into action to give her a shot.

Nice people but they give hours on the phone message and you drive all the way out there to a piece of paper on the door that says by appointment only and have someone explain what could have been on the phone message.

Be careful! manager is not very nice. Especially if you ask what she deems as "too many" questions. think I changed my mind, I'm going to look for a place to adopt from where the managers aren't judgmental and condescending towards innocent Applicators who have no idea what your policies State or how you run your business. Although I understand the policy that my one PUPPY who just finished growing need to be fixed before adopting another,(again, a strange policy that isnt even mentioned on the website, but they dont adopt to parents who "support keeping intact animals" because they "don't want anymore puppies" in their facility....you don't like dogs?..You dont want to be in business? Every parent and puppy's situation is different when it comes to spaying/Neutering time.. I don't understand..) I didn't even react rudely, was just curious on why, and what I could do to still have a chance at the dog I wanted to give a good home to. She treated me like I was begging, telling me 'dont get my hopes up' and 'Im not promising you anything" and was VERY sarcastic for no reason. Im asking QUESTIONS lady, "was lost in the woods/female" is NOT information on a dog. They put up such LITTLE information about their dogs and policy's but want to act sarcastic and stuck up when you are confused. We don't treat fellow animal lovers this way. What a shame, this is a loving and time flexible home. Always have time for the pups. I'm not going to continue fighting because I don't trust shelters with low patience and mean personalities for no good reason. :(

Wow. I'm really sorry to read the other unfortunate review of this shelter, It's unfortunate because, while the reviewer can clearly write a negative review, they can't read a website. If they had, they'd have seen the shelter's hours. No, a shelter cannot stay open an extra five minutes for you or me. If they did, someone else would expect them to stay five minutes after that and so on. I'm not sure why we expect people to respect our boundaries and need for work/life balance but don't respect this need for others. Moving on. I've engage in dog rescue for 30 years. I've transported, fostered, foster failed, adopted, trained, etc. You name it and I've done it - all over the country as I've moved for jobs. And I can tell you this shelter is deserving of not one less star than 5. Saw a beautiful furbaby that pulled my heart on, I believe, Petfinder. That was Saturday evening. Sunday morning, I left a message for the shelter to call me to speak about the baby. Now, newsflash? Most shelters today aren't open AT ALL on Sunday. Many don't even have a voice mail for you to leave a message. No one is returning your calls for days or weeks after your message is left - if a message is returned at all. So it made me very happy to hear from Connie before the shelter closed at 11 AM. She was kind and helpful. Told me everything she knew about the baby and the process of adoption. I contacted her back during the break - they close from 11 AM to 4 PM on Sundays, and asked if I could run up to the shelter in the afternoon to see the dog. Connie returned that message despite it being during the break. She arranged for a volunteer to stay until I got there to see the dog. When we were running late due to traffic, she made sure the volunteer was kept informed. You think that's worth anything less than 5 stars? Yeah, see, neither do I. We got to the shelter and Georgeanna Burns was there to greet us. Ms. Burns has volunteered at the shelter for YEARS. She's a warm, genuine, beautiful soul and we felt instantly comfortable with her. Please note that the lady stayed until 5:30 PM - on a Sunday - 2+ HOURS after she was to go home - so that we could see this dog. You think that's worth less than 5 stars? Yeah, see, neither do I. Nice setup. Lots of room for the dogs to play outside. Separate ends of the building for dogs and cats. There's a room for one to get to know their potential new family member. No one is rushing you. No one is telling you that you can only see two dogs. Nothing but love for these animals and the process. I didn't see the kennels as the dog was brought to us. But I have no doubt that everything is fine. We ceretainly didn't see anything amiss. Will you have to make an appointment, Yes, you will. Unlike other shelters, you'll be able to do so. We ended up adopting through another rescue because another dog suited our needs better. BUT . . . and it's a HUGE BUT . . .I was so impressed with how things were handled that I had to write to let you know. Looking for a furbaby? Look no further and make that appointment.

We adopted our beagle, Ellie (formerly Juno), in September 2021. SCHS truly made it the most wonderful experience. They were very thorough in making sure that we were the right family for her and were always honest and upfront about the process. We whole heartedly recommend this rescue and hope to adopt from them again!?

The two ladies I had contact with during my adoption process were amazing! My husband and I were so impressed with how clean the cat room was and the care these women give to these cats. We are so blessed to have adopted our Jay from there. Would recommend this place to anyone. Remember everyone working here are volunteers.

I contacted the shelter through petfinder asking a couple of very basic questions about a dog...size...age.. and was sent a useless from letter from Dennis the President telling me only how to fill out an application. This dog has been there for WEEKS! You need to have basic info with the dog's pics or ANSWER QUESTIONS THAT ARE EMAILED TO YOU. And it looks like Laverne and Shirley are a bonded pair and not being adopted as such. Thanks for the info about them being thrown out of a car... NO other info. though. Are they housebroken?? Is anyone working these dogs to vette temperment and behavior or finding them foster homes that will do this? That is what a shelter does. You're not helping these dogs Dennis... (Mr. President) Find a qualified manager who CARES.

Really amazing place. The best shelter I've ever seen... and I'm from out of state. Super kind, helpful people. They even have play ROOMS, where the animals can hang and socialize, instead of just cages. I felt because of this that the animals were especially friendly and well-behaved.I brought them an injured but really sweet abandoned cat (her name is Suzie and she is still up for adoption!) and they have been taking great care of her. Usually when I visit a shelter I feel sad for the animals, but not here. This place is doing incredible work. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

So far we have adopted two kitties (Ellis aka Milo and most recently Daisy) from here and we have not been disappointed. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and love these fur babies so much. Consider visiting them. Them have a lot of fur babies who are looking for their furever home!!! ??

Staff were wonderful. I drove from Delaware and adopted a kitten for my son to have as a companion. Every little bit helps because our youth are struggling with Covid-19 pandemic. Staff greeted us at the door we made ourselves at home. We were given toys, food and blankets for our new kitten we adopted. Shot record included. The Salem Humane Society needs resources, donations etc. They are spreading love and kindness caring for unwanted/ neglected animals. My son loves his new friend Tulip

Bureaucratically, this organization is beautifully run. Every email I sent was promptly and thoroughly responded to, and the phone calls were very clear and courteous.Aside from that, and where it matters, I have never seen an organization so dedicated to loving their animals and getting them adopted. The president almost verbatim told me “that’s our main goal, get these animals adopted, so whatever we gotta do we’ll do”.I highly recommend this shelter to anyone living even remotely close.
