I went to the Montclair location a couple days ago for the first time. I had an interesting experience .The salon itself is very clean, friendly staff, nice music, good atmosphere. I got root touch up service. They washed my hair and I dried it myself. I was happy with the results. They had a membership of $42 for getting your roots done every six weeks which I thought was a good deal so I decided to go for it. The colorist said instead of paying $75 for the root touchup,I will basically be paying $42 so I went for it!So here is when it gets interesting. When it was time for me to pay. I was told instead of paying $87 I will pay $51 and I was so confused about the $87 since the root touchup is $75 The stylist ( I don’t know her name) who is blonde and had glasses with a thick accent told me that I had to pay for the difference in between the two amounts, so I asked her what was she referring to. She just kept repeating the same thing which was “You just have to pay for the difference, I had two minutes left on the meter where I parked my car so I had to run. I just tapped my card gave her 20% tip and left. When I called the customer service to make my next appointment which will be in six weeks basically from that day, I casually askwhat was the breakdown of the $87.I was told that the $87 was $75 for touchup plus $12 for conditioner as an add-on service. By the way, I have attached the receipt. As you can see the total is $87 but it doesn’t mention that it’s 75 standard for touchup plus additional charge of $12 For conditioner.I really don’t appreciate her charging me for a service that she never asked me if I wanted it and never disclose the amount I would’ve had to pay extra.I personally wouldn’t trust someone like this, this was an unpleasant experience for me especially as a new customer who just got a membership. If you go to this location, please be advised that they might charge you additional service without asking you or letting you know. Especially when It doesn’t even reflect on the receipt.Very disappointing for Montclair location!

I booked an appointment this morning and walked out crying after 25 minutes without getting the service. I brought reference photos and explained that I have little experience dyeing my hair. I wanted to camouflage my greys, especially in the front, and lighten it up a bit. What I did not want was all-over black/dark brown, but something a little lighter than my natural color. I had communication issues with the person helping me starting when she walked me over to a color selection screen and chose something very dark and didn't listen when I tried to ask for something lighter. She was difficult to understand, but I was told a few things that came across as insulting and contradictory: - I have too much grey [for highlights] - my hair is too long - my hair is too short - what I am asking for won't look good - she told me i had the option for all over dark color or highlights and when I said I wanted highlights she responded that it would be ugly and she doesn't recommend it. At that point, I got too frustrated and just walked out. If I had wanted all-over dark brown color, I would have just bought a box from Target. I'm really disappointed with the experience and feel like I wasted my time.

This salon is AMAZING. My colorist did an amazing job on my color for my roots through my ends and the color came out exactly how I wanted it to be. Thank you to my colorist for giving me the perfect color shade.

Made appointment for full blonde highlights ($170) showed a picture and explained to the woman what I wanted. I had some brown highlights leftover from when I got it in June. Took over 3 hours and left with the same color and nothing in my roots touched. This other woman was nice enough to charge me $80 instead but still shouldn’t have paid anything over $30. My hair looks completely the same from when I came in.

I am a Madison Reed member, and I've always enjoyed their products and services at the color bar. At this, location I had roots, accent highlights, and a blowout, all of which I was happy with. The results were great. Unfortunately, I have to take off two stars because of how uncomfortable I felt witnessing how the person--who I am assuming is the manager--was treating my colorist. It was nothing short of bullying. If you see an employee struggle, the last thing you want to do is ride them on every little thing they are or arent doing, and much less in front of clients. To add insult to injury, because my colorist hadn't taken her break, she commanded that she "SIT DOWN!!!!", and the manager proceeded to give me the most aggressive hair wash of my life herself; not even bothering to ask if the water temp was comfortable--it was not. Although, I absolutely LOVED the work my colorist did, and how well she treated me, I will not be returing to this location as long as this manager works here. I do not condone bullying at any age or any place, especially in a place of business.

Love their membership concept - this is what drew them to me initially. It’s interesting how things work because the person who does your hair will always be different, which is actually nice because everyone is skilled and kind and you don’t have to work around any one person’s schedule. The service level is moderate because it is not meant to be exactly like a salon experience. You should not expect luxury, however I think there is a good value for the price. Bonus: There is a foot stool for your feet at the shampoo sink and they do have coffee if you ask. Don’t expect them to brush your hair out after your hair is washed (if you aren’t getting a blow dry with them). I personally prefer just to do the self-dry as I don’t mind doing it myself. They have brushes and products available for your personal use. I also love that their color doesn’t use ammonia and other chemicals. I have sensitive skin and I have not been bothered by this. Also, note that appointments may not run exactly on schedule - the first time they were more behind than the second. All in all, both my visits I spent 2 hrs there (including me blowing my own hair). I would highly recommend for a single process if you are someone who would like to frequently color their hair and is ok with a moderate service level.

I need there to be negative stars on this app because wow this is probably the most horrific experience I've had at any salon EVER. I was there yesterday in hopes of getting my hair dyed without too much damage being done because of Madison's Reed ingredients I was drawn to go there. The negative experience starts bad and keeps getting worse and worse. I walk into an empty salon which is fine but I couldn't help but wonder why a salon on Bloomfield Ave of Montclair has no customers. I decided to not let that sway me away. I am greeted by a stylist and checks my booking and sees highlights. I clicked the option of highlights because within the website it is in the same category of balayage and that is what I wanted. So I explain this to her and she says that highlights are the same thing but not all the way to the roots. I show her my reference photo and she says that its highlights and that she can do that. I said okay no worries. She starts bringing out the bleach and products to start on my hair and we get started. We start making small talk and within the first 5 minutes of her starting my hair with bleach already started she tells me that she's over being a stylist and she wants a career change and that she's wants to get out of the business. Not exactly comforting words you want to hear when you're getting your hair done. I honestly was fighting my hardest against my gut wrenching urge to politely leave. I kept telling myself just be nice and she won't f*** up your hair. She made some snarky comments about my hair (I told her I wanted it to grow long and healthy and she said "well it won't be long like my hair" & "not with you coloring it and the damage you have" & "I can tell you haven't washed your hair") So comforting and professional. I then ask about the salon and she proceeds to tell me AS SHES DOING MY HAIR that the products do not work because they don't have ammonia. That you're lucky if you get a subtle change. That regular salons are better because they use products that are needed for these services. At this point I feel defeated and just want to leave but she was already halfway done with my bleaching. She then asks me if I'm hiring at my job because I'm told her I manage a restaurant. I didn't really care much about that but it was just making me super uncomfortable but I was ultimately being nice in hopes of leaving with my hair looking decent. When it was time to wash up at this point it was around 6:00 and she said that her shift was over so she was going to pass me to another person. She tells the assistant what to do next with my hair and I heard: Put the color on the top half for 20 then add the rest to the ends for 10 for a total of 30 minutes. What does the poor unsupervised assistant do? Apply color to my whole head for 40 minutes. As I was getting washed up from the color the manager shows up and talks to the assistant about how she has to be in the city at 8 o'clock. I was the only person in the whole salon and I had a blowout scheduled naturally after a coloring session. After I heard her mumbling about needing to be somewhere the assistant asked me if I was ready for my blowout. I said no I'll blow dry it at home. She says okay let me just dry your front piece so you can see the color. She then applied absolutely no product to my hair and doesn't even brush it and blowdries my front piece from completely wet to dry. Even I, a person who has no experience with hair whatsoever, knows that you have to dry hair 70% of the way before taking a brush to it for blowouts. She does my front piece frizzy as ever and asks me if I like the color. MY ENDS ARE PINK AND MY TOP HALF IS BRASSY BLONDE. I tell her and she grabs her manager.Manager sees my hair and sends me back to the washup sink and applies color remover ONLY TO THE BOTTOM OF MY HAIR... She then mumbles and chuckles about how bad of a job the stylist did while I'm just sitting below her waiting for a miracle. After
