I paid a second visit to Casablanca Precision Cutters at 465 Main Street, Metuchen, New Jersey. They had taken over from the renowned Luigi's Barber shop across the road. Luigi had been my barber for many a year before I moved to the United Kingdom. On my return to the States, I was grieved to hear that Luigi had passed on and his business had been sold. Out of nostalgia, I went to his shop which still bore his name on the front.
Owing to my frequent journeys to and fro England, I had not been able to patronise this barber shop. Luigi had a great admiration for my hair and often said that if he ever entered a hair stylists contest, he would take me as his model. He was a true artist and a master of his craft.
I wear my hair back combed. It is a style that is both difficult and easy to cut. Difficult because it requires precision and evenness. Easy because a skilled barber can do it without trouble.
Today, I arrived without a booking. I had slipped my mind that Casablanca Precision Cutters, who had moved just across the corner from Luigi's shop, needed an appointment for a cut. To my surprise, Jay, or Lefty as he is called, recognised me from my last visit and kindly agreed to take me without a booking, though I had to wait a bit.
While I waited, I observed both proprietors cutting their customers' hair. I could plainly see their passion and devotion in their work. It reassured me that I would not get a poor haircut, which is often my lot at a new place. Even the best Barber needs a few tries before he learns how to handle my hair.
Jay, or Lefty, greeted me warmly and ushered me to his chair. He inquired about my preferences and then set to work. I could sense how keenly he was attending to my hair. When he finished, I inspected my hair and found them faultless. Jay had spent a good deal of time on my hair. He scrutinised them from every angle to ensure they were impeccable. By then, I was thoroughly impressed by his dedication and skill.
I have written at length to praise his work and devotion. He had kept his promise to give me the best haircut when I came back. He not only remembered his words, but he honoured them. Bravo. Splendid work, Jay.

Heard about how you treated, that african American woman today! Not cool! Definitely shouldn’t be a way to run a shop or how guest should be treated upon arrival screw you!

My husband has gone to Hank for decades because no other stylist comes close to Hank's skill. When my stylist retired, I gave Hank a shot and got a fabulous haircut. Hank is patient, kind, and a good listener. He made sure he was clear on my preferences before he did anything. The results are great! His prices are ridiculously reasonable, too. The salon isn't posh, but I'd take a great haircut over a posh salon any day!

Over excellent hair dresser. Also fun to talk with. Listened to my needs and made corrections, using his own judgements, to my dull, limp, badly cut hair. He says he's busy Weds & Sat mostly. Covid really hurting his business. He has been at that location for years. Go and get something done there people, let's keep this business going! Worn my mask the whole time! Even when applying dye, washing and under the dryer. He worn one also. Didn't think that was possible! He made me so comfortable!

The owner is one of the rudest men I have ever met! I walked into the salon around 6pm to inquire about their services. The owner was on the phone and put the phone to the side. I mentioned that I am interested in highlights, and asked if I could get a tissue to blow my runny nose till he finished the call (it was ice cold outside). His response: No! We are closed. Get out! We are closed! My response: Interesting. His response: Yeah! Get out we are closed! Not even worth one star!

I was totally pleased and thrilled with my experience. My haircut and color was perfect, the price was very fair, and I was treated as very special. There was almost no waiting. Hendrick was the best!
