“Lots of British items, both hot and packaged, for sale. Pretty cool shop! I couldn't eat much because I'm lactose intolerant. I had the sausage in a blanket, and the Scottish egg, both pictured. The sausage was just okay. The egg was interesting and pretty good.”

“Trader Joe's is named after its founder, Joe Coulombe. The company began in 1958 as a Greater Los Angeles area chain known as Pronto Market convenience stores. Coulombe felt the original Pronto Markets were too similar to 7-Eleven, which he described as the "800-pound gorilla of convenience stores", and was concerned that the competition would be too heavy.Coulombe developed the idea of the Trader Joe's South Seas motif while on vacation in the Caribbean. The Tiki culture craze was still widespread in the United States in the 1960s, so in a direct nod to the fad, the Trader Joe's name itself was a spoof on Trader Vic's, the famous tiki-themed restaurant that had opened its first southern California location in the Beverly Hilton in 1955. Eating at Trader Vic's in Beverly Hills was notoriously expensive, but the Trader Joe's in Pasadena provided an irreverent and less expensive offering of food and drink. Coulombe noted two trends in the US that informed the merchandising of his new store concept: one, the number of college-educated people was rising steadily, due in part to the G.I. Bill, and two, with new jumbo jets due to premiere in 1970, international travel would be accelerating as well. A better educated, more well-traveled public were acquiring tastes they had trouble satisfying in American supermarkets at the time. The first store branded as "Trader Joe's" opened in 1967 in Pasadena, California; it remains in operation. In their first few decades, some of the stores offered fresh meats provided by butchers who leased space in the stores, along with sandwiches and freshly cut cheese, all in-store.In 1979, owner and CEO of Aldi Nord Theo Albrecht bought the company as a personal investment for his family. Coulombe was succeeded as CEO by John V. Shields in 1987. Under his leadership, the company expanded into Arizona in 1993 and into the Pacific Northwest two years later. In 1996, the company opened its first stores on the East Coast in Brookline and Cambridge, both outside Boston. In 2001, Shields retired and Dan Bane succeeded him as CEO.Since its inception, Trader Joe's has continued to expand across the United States. In 2004, BusinessWeek reported that Trader Joe's quintupled its number of stores between 1990 and 2001 and increased its profits tenfold. In February 2008, BusinessWeek reported that the company had the highest sales per square foot of any grocer in the United States. Two-and-a-half years later and in 2016, Fortune magazine estimated sales to be $1,750 in merchandise per square foot, more than double the sales generated by Whole Foods.Joe Coulombe, the namesake of the brand, died in 2020. His memoir and business guide, Becoming Trader Joe, was published in 2021.Dan Bane retired as the CEO in July 2023 and was succeeded by Bryan Palbaum, previously the company's COO and president. At the same time, the company named Jon Basalone as vice-CEO and president, taking over Palbaum in the latter role.”

“The highest Quality Meat Sold anywhere, This is the only place to go for fresh Beef, chicken , and especially Lamb,... The owner personally goes to meat auctions to purchase the best possible meat, Not like any store in the area. They will go out of there way to make sure you get want you want, cut the way you want and by far the CLEANEST place to buy meat. -- Don't forget to get the homemade Kofta, and Adana ground meats.”

“So I came in to buy just a few things in a hurry. I never been in a Trader Joe's but I like the cleanliness and atmosphere. It's definitely smaller than most grocery stores I've been in. I definitely see they have more organic and healthy items than you would find in a regular grocery store. I would come back for specific items but maybe not regular shopping”

“I recently visited Vanilla Gourmet and had a great experience! They have a wide selection of Turkish goods and more. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The market is well-organized, nicely designed, and clean. I highly recommend Vanilla Gourmet and will definitely be back!”

“Matko boska! The selection and prices here are very good. I will return to this establishment and Polish district overall. I would however check the expiration date on things to make sure they aren't already expired before you buy. I bought about 50 items and I only found 1 or 2 that were expired but a few that would be expiring within the next 60 days. The other problem here is the lady that works there is from the communist Poland era so don't expect any good customer service skills. She seems annoyed at having to work here and isn't willing to help much, probably didn't get any Biden bucks.”

“Garden Gourmet really is an oasis in this neck of the Kingsbridge-Riverdale woods. The quality is uniformly high, with a few exceptions, and the prices are decent. More expensive than, say, Stop & Shop across the street, but overall a vastly superior store. Produce selection is abundant, with plenty of organic options. You can tell the store has a buyer who cares about quality. Again, with exceptions. They occasionally sell Sunset brand products, like tomatoes, which are not good. They should do better quality control on tomatoes. Also, there are many bagged veggies, like spinach and salads, which can contain spoilage and are best avoided. I wish they would eliminate these, but I guess people like them because the veggies are pre-washed. But there are plenty of fresh alternatives to these. The meat and chicken section also is good quality, but can be pricey, except they have an excellent deal on Bell & Evans chickens, which are top-notch. (They also offer cheap mass-produced Perdue chickens which are tasteless, but can be avoided.) The butchered meat selection is not huge, more select, but good quality and reasonably priced. However, if you're going for processed packaged meats, like sausages and other deli cuts, they have tons of high-quality imports, along with quality sliced ham, turkey, and other cold cuts that they package themselves. Their fresh fish selection is small, but good quality and not cheap. Smoked fish, though? Huge selection. Then there's the cheese -- a superb curated spread that's massive considering the size of the store, with many great prices. One picayune exception: their house-made fresh mozzarella is bland. Luckily they have other brands. Garden Gourmet obviously prides itself on their house-made products, including bean salads, olives, slaw, potato salads, etc. -- and these are uniformly good. They also offer a TON of prepared cooked food for take-home meals, but I never buy that stuff because I cook for myself. It sure looks and smells good though. The GG has a HUGE selection of locally sourced bread off all types that blows away any supermarket. Also a nice pick of cakes and pies and other baked goods that are either house made or locally sourced. One other criticism of GG: Their coffee beans are inferior. I wish they'd get a new supplier for these. Othewise there is SO MUCH more I could say about this store -- like discuss their IMMENSE selection of products imported from mainly Eastern European countries -- but I've blabbed on enough. If the Garden Gourmet ever closed down I'd be shattered.”

“Just revisited after many years. So glad not much has changed. This place truly is a blast from the past. Amazing Italian family food served with passion and vociferous Italian voices. This place isn't lunch, it's an experience. Fabulous veggie options too. Visit why you can. I'm terrified I'll turn up one day and this piece of local history will be no more.”

“Best spot for produce and groceries in all of downtown Jersey City. I have never been disappointed with their avocado selection (or any of the produce) for taco Tuesday (or any day)! Not to mention this is a family owned and operated business, so the level of service and care is always there. I have been coming here for 9 years and can only say great things about this market! ❤️”

“This Trader Joe's has an extremely friendly and welcoming staff, very attentive, and the checkout lines moves quickly. They have many items not found in NJ which is where I reside, however, stock is often low. In all fairness though, many retailers are struggling to stock shelves because of the covid-19 economic impact. At the time of this rating the global supply chain was still lagging, recovering.”
