Cute little shop with a mix of items in a shared space. So some seem specific to the project of educating girls in Kenya, while the clothing line (I noticed a made in China tag) may support the local site. I was told it was non profit. Very nice women there explained the project to me patiently answering my questions. If I had the time I would have taken her up on her offer to make a few stitches in her flat bags to be able to add a bottom for groceries. Next time I have a lunch date in town, I think I will go a little early to do so. Worth a visit!

I don’t remember how I first heard about Seeds to Sew International, but I’m glad I did!I reached out to the organization back in May, I had checked out their website and was interested in buying a knapsack. Nina, the Operation Manager got back to me quickly, and sent me attachments for the patterns they had for the knapsack which was helpful. Since I wasn’t able to stop at the store, she let me know I could purchase the knapsack at the Pennington Farmers Market. That’s where I picked up a knapsack and also bought a bracelet. Great customer service!I’ve had the knapsack since May and I like it a lot! Which means I use it a lot, I put my sunglasses, makeup bag, small water bottle etc. It works great for smaller items at the farmers market. Since, I’ve used it a lot I’ve washed it a few times. I was originally going to hand wash it but instead I put the knapsack in a garment bag in cold water and had it air dry, and had good results.I like the bracelet I bought too, it looks blue and orange but in the sun it looks purple. It’s a fun piece of jewelry I like to wear for a pop of color. Most importantly Seeds to Sew is supporting women and girls in Kenya to make their lives better with the items they sell! Check out their website and store, I think you’ll find something you like!

I saw a flier for Seeds to Sew International advertising a Mata Traders pop up when I was walking around Hopewell last week. It just so happens that I had heard of Mata Traders and was interested in the fair trade ethics of the company as well as their great dresses and skirts (love me some dresses and skirts with pockets). I stopped into Seeds to Sew International today and am so happy I did! As of April they have a storefront on Seminary Ave (they had been in the back of the store before, which isn't great for foot traffic). I talked to Nina, the Operations Manager, for a bit about the organization and the work they do in Kenya. Seeds to Sew International teaches participants to sew reusable gift bags- so much better than throwing out wrapping paper each holiday- and builds upon those skills so that eventually they are making items like wrap skirts. They also have a beading program and a crafting program, which both use the money earned to pay for girls' education in rural Kenya. I love that I was able to walk away with an item I loved (a skirt with pockets from the Mata Traders pop up) and feel good about where my money went. How often do the products we buy better the world around us? This is a great model that I wish more places would follow. The best part? They'll be having a new pop up each month! Best of luck- I can't wait to see what you do next!

This is a wonderful organization that is doing good and important work with absolutely no fanfare. The commitment of Ellyn Ito and the staff is inspiring. Working with the women in Kenya in not a project for them but a real outpouring of the responsibility offer a hand up when it is needed. Their goal is to equip these women with skills and help them set up their own businesses thus allowing them to be self sufficient. The gift of empowerment is priceless and the work of Seeds to Sew International has made this their mission. I am glad to support this important work and encourage others to do the same.
