My wife and I were excited to get our taxes sorted out by an expert tax adviser, we came with a few questions but I left very disappointed. The adviser we saw yesterday didn't seem like she know what she was doing. In addition, she made a huge condescending remark to me saying she couldn't understand my accent and turn to my wife to repeat what I've said. This was very rude and we didn't feel like responding back as we don't go low like that. Even though she also had a huge accent. We filed our return at the same location the year prior and it went smoothly. She forgot to disclose at the beginning too that any personal brokerage filing would be an additional charge. This was only communicated to us at the end of the meeting once we had to pay. We felt like it was very much a lack of professionalism to not be clear on the cost for each filing from the beginning. All of that to say that the customer service was not great at all. We left so dissatisfied and won't file there going forward

We have them prepare personal tax return. They miscalculated the tax which leads to more than necessary tax due. Fortunately the IRS spotted and refund us hundreds of dollars. Furthermore, as I personally study the tax code, I find that they are not doing the best possible and allowable job to maximize refund. Even a premium version of turbotax does better job. Consider alternatives if your tax situation is a bit complex.

Extremely disappointing experience this year. We've been using H&R Block, specifically Christine Leon, for the last 2 years to do our taxes. This years customer service was just downright terrible. We had the hardest time communicated with Christine. It was a challenge to get in touch with her to review our return and questions we had. When we finally did, what she was saying still did not make sense. Then she told us we had to pay our IRS and NJ tax bill online through the state/gov't website. I questioned this several time. I emailed, called, and used the online portal and Christine consistently ignored my questions. She kept insisting we had to pay on the website though I was confused because our tax write up noted my bank again. Now, fast forward to tax day, my worries all came true. Our tax bill was paid 2x. Once through the state/gov't websites and then a direct debit from our bank account. We are now out of $4000 cash. I spent hours trying to get in touch with the IRS yesterday to try and get this rectified. Today I will need to call the state of NJ, I am sure I will have the same miserable time getting in touch with them. We tried all day yesterday to get in touch with someone at H&R Block but no one answered our calls. My husband spent an hour on hold with their corporate office. Christine was unreachable and still has not responded to our emails and calls. What a mess this has all caused.Moral of this story is -- AVOID this place, specifically Christine Leon. She's impossible to communicate with and clearly does not care about her customers.

Whatever you do, don't hire Mahendra Agrawal at H&R Block in Hoboken NJ. This tax preparation "service" is a joke. We used H&R Block for our 2019 tax filings in the hopes that this would be the year we can finally get reliable help with taxes. The initial filing did not save us time, as we spent countless hours reviewing and pointing out numerous mistakes. But we clearly we should have spent countless more. In 2020, we received our first audit letter from the NJ state government pointing out that the tax preparer ONLY REPORTED ONE OF OUR INCOMES in the state filing (despite filing both incomes for federal), and we did not pay the correct amount on capital gains as a result of our income level. This was neither a complicated tax loophole nor some intricate detail--it was a complete lack of attention to the basics. After chasing this issue down, we asked Mahendra if we should file an amended return. He advised that we should not, and that H&R Block would not cover the filing fee for an amended return at this time, but if we received any follow up letters, H&R Block could help with this. We reluctantly agreed to this on his advice. In 2022, we received the second audit letter charging the difference plus hundreds of dollars in interest and penalties. We reached out to Mahendra again (which took some time, as he advised us he only worked on Saturday and could only respond once a day), he changed his tune to say that H&R Block would not cover the interest or penalties, and we should have filed the amended return in 2020. He refused to give us the name of his manager to escalate this, and suggested we speak to customer service.Safe to say, we now do our own taxes.
