Mike, the owner of Mike's Autobody & Automotive has a contract with the town. While I was in the hospital, coming out of a coma, my vehicle, taken from my home and used without my permission, was impounded and stored here. It was impossible for me to go to the police station for the release of my vehicle, and I had no one to go for me. By the time I was able to find someone to do this for me, the bill was $2,400. If I had to wait 2 more months until I was home to do this, I would have lost my vehicle, and still had three years of payments to make on it.Mike charged his normal rates, and was entitled to do so legally. Unfortunately, I feel as though initially I was misled by the owner of this company. So I was shocked when the person who retrieved my vehicle told me that Mike stated many times he wanted to keep my vehicle for himself personally.Mike lives close to me, and when I spoke with him initally, he seemed to be kind. He even offered to trailer the vehicle back to my house. However I couldn't do anything without the release document from the police. Obviously, I was in no position to get it myself. This was my experience with this business. I am not posting this review to be petty. I think people who support locally-owned businesses should know something about the way the business operates. In the 33 years I've lived here, I have found that the people here take care of each other :) So after 5 months stay in the hospital, with more surgeries to go still, disabled, with three amazing children to raise who have already lost their father, and almost lost me, I have to come up with $2,500 to pay back.Even though Mike agreed at one point to freeze the storage fees because I was in the hospital, and shortly after change his mind, I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and figured he needed the money. After all it is his business and he is entitled to run it anyway he would like.I've been sad to see so many local businesses fold over time. I was one of the founding members of the Hammonton Mother's club, which is still thriving. The club and so many others in Hammonton do much to help both in and out of our community. This is one of the reasons Hammonton is such a great community.I hope in the future, Town Council does not give contracts to businesses on bids only. With so many caring people in town running businesses, perhaps a dollar amount should not be the only thing considered. Something to think about when deciding if you want to use this business for your needs...
