Did the job, stored some of my items in the garage while I did some renovations. However……..One of the 3 boxes delivered was infested with Black mold. A true sign of water leaking in.I didn’t bother trying to get a new one or replacing it. I just made sure that it would be the box I used for items that can handle a little moisture.Unfortunately it still got the best of one of my shelves. Photos attached.I really wasn’t going to write this review, but when I got a call from a female sales rep from Elizabeth, NJ about the Box pickup, I was trying to explain to her it was delivered 2 days later then my contract, so I should get an extra 2 day grace period…..she really didn’t care, nor did she even try to empathize with me.So I said to myself ok no problem, let me just spread awareness to future customers…..

First of, I want to say that I do not generally write bad reviews but this business establishment needs an honest review from a real customer who tried to work the problems out with Smartbox for a full 2 weeks. I rented out 2 boxes from smart box in December 2020. I scheduled date and time for box drop off at our location, but 2 days prior to the scheduled time, smart box cancelled our drop offs due to driver shortage (understandable due to covid). I scrambled and decided to rent a Uhual, packed up our furniture and brought it over to smart box facility in Elizabeth, NJ and reloaded into the boxes. (The boxes were in somewhat of a beat up condition. The door won't close and it needed to be forcefully shut. One box was in a better condition than other, but not much better). Everything went smoothly there for the most part. In July of 2021, I requested to access the box to add more items to the box. It was raining heavy all morning but stopped in the afternoon. By the time I arrived, there was sunshine. My boxes were already outside waiting for me but I did not know how long it has been sitting out there. For God knows, they might have sat outside there while it was raining, waiting for my arrival. Fast forward to Sept 2021, we called smart box to drop off our boxes at our new place (no problem with drop off scheduling) and upon unloading and bringing my couch into the unit, the movers bought to my attention that my West Elm couch that I used for about 2 years were molded. The couch was position in the right, all the way back corner of the box. And that particular corner of the box showed signs of water damage from top down to bottom with mold residues when I moved my couch out. I assumed the water seeped through slowly from somewhere in that corner specifically as other corners of the box were dry. I was definitely not happy because the couch was not a cheap, throw away couch and it is a relatively new couch. I called and emailed smart box regarding this issue that day, Sept 3 but no response until the 9th when Judy Fisher (the claim's manager who is very nasty and unprofessional) finally emailed me back and had me fill out the claim form. Judy kept telling me that the owner was away and she couldn't reach him for answer. I waited patiently with time appropriate follow ups every few days. On Sept 16, (yes it took them 2 weeks with limited communication to finally get back to us) our claim was right out denied with smart box claiming that they don't know where water came from (so do I? my belongings were in smart box possession for almost a year). They also said that they did not know the condition of my couch (the couch was over 3k retail and gently used for about 2 years which I have pictures of my open house to view, it was a perfect couch), do you really think I would not take care of that couch? That was smart box's reason to not take any responsibility when I sent them all the pictures and proofs of water damage of the box and my couch. On top of that, the claim manager, Judy Fisher, insinuated that I put a moldy couch in there to being with. I requested Judy Fisher to review any possible footage on the day I accessed the box to see if the boxes were sitting in the rain. She was adamant on saying the claim is closed and there is nothing she can do for us. She threatened to hang up on me multiple times because she couldn't handle the pressure. Listen, I do not expect smart box to buy me a brand new couch. Its understandable that they should not take full responsibility since they did not know our couch condition prior to me using their service. I would at least expect some kind of responsibility from smart box since they had my belongings for 9 months. Maybe pay for our couch cleaning? may be take a month off of the rental? May be something to show some type of liability? Smart box decided to deny everything and move on as if nothing happen. Photos will show a broken pillar on the roof of the box with nails exposed. What a horrendous experience we continue to have. Like other reviewers, the loading of the box a year ago was smooth. Now we are trying to ship across the country and TERRIBLE. We wait on the line for an agent, who then tells us they can't do long distance moves and we have to speak to a different agent. Then the call gets dropped or someone says we have to speak to the first representative we ever dealt with, but she's always busy. She doesn't answer our emails or call us back and no one else wants to help us or says they don't know when our stuff is arriving. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH YOUR LONG DISTANCE MOVE!!

I'm overseas. My box is stored at the Smartbox Elizabeth NJ. I just wanted to verify that my box wasn't water damaged in last week's floods in NJ due to hurricane Ida. I discovered that Smartbox is sub-contracted out to another company. After 3 days of talking to Smarbox customer service, I've had no success simply getting a direct number to the location where my box is stored, let alone a confirmation that my box isn't water damaged. No one at Smartbox is able to help me! Total nightmare dealing with this company. If I had known this, I would not have chosen to store my stuff with them in the first place.

I had a great experience when I first set up to have my belongings stored but now (1 year later) I’m trying to retrieve my belongings and I cannot reach anyone. I’ve been trying for over a week - multiple numbers, online contact form, emails, live chat - nothing. This is so incredibly frustrating.

THEY DO NOT ANSWER PHONE TO ACCEPT PAYMENT AND THEN CHARGE A LATE CHARGE. TRYING TO GET MY BOX PICKED UP FOR THREE DAYS!!! NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE AND NOW THE NAME ON THE BOX IS BIG BOX STORAGE. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE.

Smartbox Moving and Storagev early and were so professional and efficient! Because of, they wore masks and were so careful with everything. I'm grateful for their help during such a difficult time!! Thank you Smartbox Moving and Storage.

Worst experience ever. Do not recommend. They have hidden costs, such as extra fees when you need your box returned. Talking with customer service and through email they were rude and not professional (I talked to Lauren). It was such a stressful experience when trying to schedule a return delivery time because I have to wait all day for the driver and they forgot to send me a confirmation time. They were so rude, I felt like I was being treated like a baby, like I didn't understand anything. Everything was done through the phone and there were barely any records of anything - thus I did not trust them. The driver also rounded up the price of him helping me move my boxes, knowing that I was just a college student and he charged me twice as much for the time he was actually there for. Never again will I want to use their services.

Hired Smartbox to freight my stuff from NYC to Los Angeles, and despite the good yelp reviews on the LA Smartbox page, braced myself for a nightmare scenario- but couldn't have had a better experience! Zero damage, really friendly and communicative pickup/delivery guys, and cheap storage rates on the recieving end (I stored my stuff for a month before getting it delivered). HOWEVER: be aware that: a.) Their call center is eastern standard time, and closes at 5pm *EST* (which was a real pain for me on the west coast) b.) If you call them after hours, rather than telling you they're closed, their automated system puts you on hold, then eventually offers you a call-back that you'll never actually get. So be sure to call when they're actually open. c.) Once your box arrives to their center near you, you'll need to set an exact date with Smartbox to deliver it. Book your dropoff date as far in advance as you can to make sure there's a local driver available to deliver it when you want it- I got stuck waiting because i tried to book my local delivery too short notice.

The staff from being to end were professional and courteous. Delivery and pick up were on time .The driver notify us when they were 30 minutes away. I would definitely recommend Smart box to my friends.

I moved from Seattle to NYC and had a fantastic experience with Smartbox start-to-finish. Their team was professional, friendly, and efficient (Lauren, Gwen, and anyone else I missed). They offered as well a $125 credit to book in the next week-without prompt- and they were already the lowest priced pod company.

The pick up and drop off of the storage box was delayed on both ends for the long distance move. It was easy to load and unload but other than that I think I would have just hired movers. We thought we would have a definite delivery date but that moved many times and the lack of communication once our stuff was enroute was misleading.
