My wife and I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Chalfonte. We weren’t sure what to expect, as we had never been to Cape May and saw some mixed reviews of the hotel. We were incredibly pleasantly surprised! Our room was small but clean and comfortable with an updated bathroom. The historic hotel is beautiful and well maintained. Staff were friendly and helpful. The location can’t be beat, two blocks from the beach and close to everything. We enjoyed food and drinks at both the restaurant and the bar. The charming wrap-around porch was a wonderful place to spend early mornings and evnings. Complimentary chair and umbrella service was provided at the beach, a convenience we appreciated. Overall the hotel was an incredible value and surpassed our expectations for a last-minute budget-friendly stay.

Very old fashioned hotel. Rooms are not the nicest but have been remodeled. Great location as it is near many things and has live music every night

The Chalfonte has a cozy Victorian charm. Our stay in the Southern Quarters was excellent. The room was clean and comfortable. It is a short walk to the beach where we enjoyed the complementary umbrella and chairs. We enjoyed breakfast on the porch-I recommend the omelette. The staff is friendly and attentive. The Thursday night Ramble is legendary and does draw a crowd but the music stops around 9pm.

Absolutely disgusted by the way The Chalfonte handled the tragedy that occurred right out front. The band played on! Not even acknowledging that a poor, beautiful horse died right in the middle of their "party." No comment from management during or after. Pure inhumane, greed. And SHAME on all those people in attendance as well.

This hotel completely ignored the horse that DROPPED DEAD right in front of it. They had the band keep playing! How disgusting to just let this awful tragedy unfold and offer no help or support. I truly thought cape May was a better place than this. The treatment of these horses is appalling and the carriage rides need to stop. Absolutely awful behavior by everyone involved in this horrific incident.

This Victorian building from 1876 has a ton of character and charm. We arrived at 6 pm on a Friday and there was live music on the terrace, as well as a relaxed bar and restaurant vibe.
The rooms and bathrooms are small, especially for the price, and there is no TV (not that we wanted to watch it anyways), but they are clean and well kept. Bathrooms and showers are modern, and rooms have air conditioning. Beds are a bit small my legs were dangling over the edge at night and I’m not even a big person.
Overall, this is a very romantic and quaint spot that you will not regret staying in. We highly recommend it!

The first night I was here I thought it was cute. The young man at the front desk was friendly and helpful. I got room 1 which they call a suite. The floors are totally warped which I didn't mind at first till I had to start worrying about falling through the floor. The room was very clean. While laying in bed I was noticing all the paint falling from the ceiling and couldn't help but wonder if it's lead paint...I mean it has to be considering this place was built in the 1800s. No wonder they don't let kids here. Just hope it doesn't fall in my mouth while I'm sleeping. This place has such possibilities but the part that I really didn't like was Thursday night when they had a band playing from the other side of the porch with their amps blasting and while that may be fun for some, I came for a peaceful vacation and I felt like I was in Seaside Heights . a couple sat right outside my porch talking loudly on their phone and playing dice.... Well more like slamming dice. So I guess while this is fun for some definitely avoid if you don't want to hear loud music. There is a restaurant which I didn't try because the fried chicken was $32 And I think that was the cheapest thing on the menu. So all in all the place is ok but I will not stay on a Thursday night again because apparently the band plays every Thursday.

We stayed at the Old Laundry cottage, which is part of the hotel. It's a nice little cottage, but unfortunately it was very damp inside. It was very uncomfortable trying to sleep on damp sheets/pillows and even sit on a damp couch. I had the same experience when I stayed there last year. I brought this to the hotel's attention, but they said nothing. They really need to do something about that -- invest in dehumidifiers or something, but it was really unpleasant. Also, we kept spotting bugs. I like the cottage, but may look for other options in the future if these issues don't get sorted out.

We stayed here because my 79yo mother in law speaks so fondly and highly of the Chalfonte. We can see how she was taken by this place. There were lots of signs of a bygone era when it was in its heyday from the Magnolia dining room (which was closed during our stay), the period appropriate decorations and furnishings. However, much of it was showing its age such as paintings were old and faded and wicker furniture was broken and needed fresh coat of paint. Yet, we still appreciated the historical context reminiscent of that time. The wrap around porch with rocking chairs and tables with linens to socialize were charming. The staff were mostly young (probably summer college crowd home for the summer), all friendly and eager to help, some more experienced and helpful than others. The only food option at the hotel was the bar with limited menu and live music. Location was awesome since there was plenty of free street parking and not more than 10 minute walk to the beach and the shops and restaurants (aka the mall), where you have to pay for parking until 10pm. TA huge bonus is that the hotel offered beach passes which allows you onto the beach and to get chairs and umbrella for free for the day. Another hidden surprise was the cupula from the 2nd floor, which offered a great view of the beautiful view of the homes in the neighborhood and the ocean. Overall, the Chalfonte was a great value for what we got. Although it's not the same place that my MIL taled about, we still enjoyed our visit and would consider returning.

Great location and charm. We stayed in the Southern Quarters, Room 9. Overall our stay was nice, but our room was in serious need of a refresh. Our bed spread had numerous stains and there were cobwebs on the ceiling. We felt the beds were sort of uncomfortable, and the wooden doorframe to the bathroom was falling apart at the floor. I will say I was also disappointed that many of the features I would expect from a regular hotel were not present. No AC, no closet, no safe/lock box, no complementary conditioner. Microwave and mini fridge are shared. It’s very “rustic”, so it’s certainly not for everyone. For me, it was a little steep considering it’s the off season and we weren’t staying in the actual Chalfonte. I’d like to come back sometime, hopefully the hotel management will make some improvements or adjustments :)Nearby activities: Beach, arcade, Bagel Time Cafe, Fudge Kitchen, Foo BaoWalkability: GREAT location

Even though ac is advertised on the website, it is turned off for the shoulder season. You should know that owner never returned my calls or emails regarding this issue. No hot water for showers, either.I submitted at claim to the CM Dept. of Consumer Affairs.
