I never write reviews only if I have something nice to say I will always give a 5 star and give a wonderful review and in all truths this is the 1st 1 star review I have ever written.I went into this store this evening and looked around with my 12 year old daughter as she was excited to see some of the surf clothes they have and trying something's on etc while the whole time one of the staff was actually standing there arms crossed watching us like we were going to sneak something into our very non existent bags we were carrying we were not being loud or rude just trying on clothes and then went and paid for the clothes we wanted as my husband that watched this going on asked if they ever have anything stolen as we were being watched like a hawk and I said it was very uncomfortable and in all truths if my daughter wasn't so excited to get the sweatshirt and t-shirt I would have said my piece and left.We don't dress the part or obviously to there standards but I could have bought the whole shop for all they know.

Visited here for the first time with my Son. Staff was extremely rude and they follow you around the store and stare at you. I like their selection of clothing, but I will not be returning to the store due to the nature of the staff.

Honestly I like the store and their merchandise. I always go in here when we are in cape may. But the negative part is employees. Don’t train your employees to follow you around and stare at you while your trying shop. Instead teach them to greet your customers and ask if they need assistance. I get that things happen in the store and you can’t trust everyone that walks in but you can’t train them this way.

Loved all of the clothes...until I looked at the price tag. $90 for a swim suit. Heck no! Staff was friendly. Overall a very nice place just a bit pricey

I love this place any time I am in Cape May or Stone Harbor, New Jersey. I live in Savannah, Georgia now and we don't have any surf shops that even compare. So much so, that I ended up ordering some branded clothing from them at the start of this season. Really friendly, and contacted me to make sure my address was correct before sending the items my way. Can't wait to visit in person, again :)

Pro-tip: don't get the manager involved Another pro-tip: the written agreement on the receipt holds no worth. I bought some sunglasses because I lost mine in the ocean. After walking around town for 2 hours with my new glasses I noticed they gave me a headache. I looked at my receipt to see the return policy. It said something to the effect of: may exchange for in-store credit within 7 days of buying the item. When we returned to the store counter we asked if we could just return them, the nice cashier said "only for in-store credit" so we asked to consult with a manager. She echoed the same rule, which is in line with the receipt's written policy. Then she went on to say that since the product was used she wouldn't exchange them, they are unsellable because they were used! We went back and forth about the sunglasses being in perfect condition just needing cleaning. She was sarcastic and rude, continually comparing the sunglasses to returning sandals, which this is very clearly an incomparable product. My suggestion is that if your policy is not to exchange used products, you need to have that in writing on the receipt and or say so when making a sale. If you don't have that in writing, you are bound to the agreement you do have. You cannot make up rules based on how you feel that day or how much you like or dislike your customers. Boo on you, miss manager.

This was our first visit to Cape May and we were happy to find Pete Smith's. It's an upscale surf shop chock full of great clothes and beach gear. We bought a lot of clothes here that were great for our vacation, but also high quality stuff we'll be happy to use back home when our vacation is over. I saw some of the reviews about the staff being rude and/or snobby and I guess I can see where they're coming from, but in my experience the staff was either friendly and polite or else maybe a bit indifferent. I wasn't bothered. I'm not mad at a 20 year old who's working a summer job and is maybe a bit "too cool to care" (authentic surfer attitude?). No big deal. Love the store. Staff ranges from great to good enough. That said, maybe other customers were treated worse than we were? We love the store.

Bad customer service, staff will watch you and follow you around made my shopping experience uncomfortable. They don’t greet you when you come in or ask you do you need help with anything. I started to think it was because I was Latina but I see everyone feels like this about the customer service.

Stuck up, rude, and miserable staff.... you work in customer service and in a shore town, maybe smile and learn to be a little more warm and helpful! A friendly attitude makes or breaks someone's shopping experience.

Wow! I just bought my niece and nephew Pete Smith Christmas shirts two days ago and they already received them! Not only were they processed and shipped fast they also were gift wrapped! Thank you so much!!!!

Pete Smith’s has such a quality selection of clothing, gift items, & beach supplies for all seasons! The staff is always pleasant and helpful with knowledge of the products in store. My favorite place to shop in Cape May!

Rude staff. Complete lack of training on customer service. Really can't believe the how we we're spoken to when trying to discuss a problem. It was like it was a joke or game to them. Ridiculous policies. Assuming this stems from management. Won't go back.
