The Gafney Library is a small, rural library with limited resources. And yet it’s an absolute jewel to the area. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Though the hours have to be limited compared to bigger libraries, the Gafney manages to accomplish miracles, I think.
A nice assortment of the latest books, videos, magazines, and local newspapers are available. If you can’t find what you are looking for in-house, the NH Online Library resources generally have it. If not there either, you can take advantage of the Interlibrary loan system and often get books in about a week.
All this is available - DYI - online. Or one of the staff will happily help you.
Due to limited space (in the adorable building), there are only two, internet-connected computers in the adult section, but I seldom have trouble getting right on. If those two are full, there are 8(?) more available in the children’s area downstairs.
WiFi is available 24/7 - even when the library is closed. (Though sometimes the router or whatever needs to be unplugged and plugged back in - like often happens.)
You can print things off the internet for $.10 a copy ($.25 for color, I think) Or use their copy machine. There are donated books for sale for $1 or less. The head librarian, Beryl, will notarize things for free! (Call ahead).
I see local groups using the space when the library is closed. They offer GED tutoring. They exhibit local artists. They offer tax help to seniors. And I’m sure I am missing some of the many ways the Gafney serves the community. The children’s section has a nice telescope you can check out!
I don’t know how ANYONE could give this library less than 5 stars. - Cindy Barstow
