We stayed here for a night during our roadtrip honeymoon. Everything was walkable from our hotel, such a central spot. Really beautifully designed rooms! Good breakfast, and friendly staff. I would stay here again!

The best place to stay in Portsmouth.

Hmmm, TLDR. This review is a tough one for us. We loved it and had some quams.
First, the people who are employed there are wonderful and personable. The location is perfect. You can walk anywhere in the town (city) and see the sites and eat at any restaurant, reservations recommended. The hotel itself is more like an inn. It's eclectic in design with wonderful woodwork all around. The room in which we stayed was brighter than what we've read about with the exception of the bathroom, which needs brightening, a lot. Just brighter bulbs would probably do the trick, but it was dark. Breakfast was wonderful but again they should really invest in new flatwhere. It's old and dingy. They may also need a new dishwasher as I found the glassware waterstained and thought they weren't even washed. More than once, I grabbed a utensil that was dirty.
This really is one of my more critical reviews, sorry. The reason for such detail is would I stay there again?
I actually think I would as strange as that sounds. I washed my utensils. Strange, yes, but the breakfast was too good to pass. We used paper cups instead of glassware. We actually found the price reasonable compared to the chain hotels on the other side of town, and the other side of town wasn't as pretty, at least we thought so.
You know, I don't know, but when we go back, again if they have brighter lighting and new utensils with a better dishwasher, this review would be so much shorter and better Good location, center point and quiet.
Nearby activities: Close to everything.
Walkability: Close to everything.

We and 20 of our family stayed at the Portsmouth Hotel in May, 2024 and it was great. All of the rooms were nicely renovated and had a lot of character. The common rooms like the living rooms, breakfast room, and game room were very useful to our group as places to both meet and hang out in the evening. The location is very close to the shops and restaurants of downtown and to the harbor. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and made our large group feel very welcome.
We highly recommend it and will definitely go back.

Small, newly renovated hotel in the center of a beautiful small town. Large and clean rooms, good location, delicious breakfast.

We stayed at The Hotel Portsmouth for 3 nights at the beginning of February. It was a beautiful place! Clean and comfortable rooms! Friendly service from check in to check out. The breakfast was perfect and there was something for everyone. We were there for the Band of Horses concert at the Music hall. Everything was in walking distance. Lots of cute shops, coffee places, great restaurants. The hotel even provides a map and suggestions for where to go, eat or visit. We will definitely be back! Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Great historic hotel, awesome customer service, and wonderful people. The breakfast is continental, with fresh fruits and berries, boiled eggs, overnight oats, yogurt, cereals and toast. The only downside in an otherwise perfect room (#303) was the strange half glass tub shower enclosure, which fails to prevent the water from escaping the tub and wetting the bath mat. Also, the lack of a full glass enclosure makes the shower cold when cool air invades the enclosure as you shower. Also, the tub needs anti-slip decals on the tub surface as it’s very slippery. Fix these two small issues and the rating would have been perfect.Rooms: See the general notes about the word tub enclosure and slippery tub floor.Walkability: Very close to Congress StreetFood & drinks: Unique breakfast included

The hotel is beautiful, clean and comfortable. Our room was great with a hardwood floor and a large walk in shower. Robes in the room were a nice touch. The common areas were spacious and nicely decorated with comfortable seating. A gas fire was very inviting.Breakfast exceeded our expectations and coffee and tea available are anytime. The staff was very helpful. Parking is free and you can walk to Portsmouth's many fun shops and delicious restaurants.

We stayed here two weeks ago and could not have been happier. It’s an old elegant building with very comfortable amenities, including a great continental breakfast, tea and coffee available around the clock, and water (still and fizzy) to fill up the carafe in your room. The bed was incredibly comfortable (the sheets are the best I’ve ever slept on), the hotel was quiet, and free parking in their lot was a huge bonus. It’s located downtown, just a 5 minute walk from many restaurants and shops. And at the end of our evening we spent a hour sitting in the parlor in the front of the hotel, having tea and cookies (complimentary) in front of the fireplace. It was a lovely stay and we will be back one day!

Excellent experience and would stay again for sure. The gentleman ( his name escapes me?) was fabulous! Courteous, informative and super welcoming and friendly! Our room was beautiful and spacious. Everything was clean and tidy with excellent toiletries. My husband and I have NO complaints! There was even a member of the staff who found me a bandaid for a blister on my foot! If I had one suggestion it would be to consider a mini fridge in the room and maybe update the hairdryer… but really I got nothing! We had an excellent stay and visit and look forward to the next time!Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!Rooms: I would only suggest a mini fridge in the room and perhaps an updated hairdryer… that’s all I got

Location great. For a continental breakfast it was very good but at $300 a night it should be. The room was disappointing. We have stayed in lots of old and quirky hotels and with that in mind our room was what one might expect in that regard, however it was rather tired and felt a bit neglected. There was a frankly disgusting air vent right next to the toilet, which there's no excuse for having, and the paintwork was chipped in many places, both the walls and the furniture. We had asked for a quiet room but we were given 101 which was quite close to reception and there were enormous fans going somewhere near us (floor below? Laundry?) which, when we were trying to go to sleep, sounded like we were sleeping inside a tumble drier. When I mentioned this on checkout the man just said "sorry to hear that" with a big smile on his face.

This is a great place to stay! The location is perfect for walking to everything downtown. The queen deluxe room was very spacious and the bed very comfortable. The shower/toilet area is not huge but big enough! The breakfast was just as described, continental with lot of options including yogurt parfaits and cold protein choices. Do not be scared off by any negative reviews. It’s an old inn that is lovely and super clean!
