Super fun local attraction. Huge inside w/ several displays, swedish decor, pews. Super knowledgeable tour guide, answered a lot of questions. Basement is pretty neat as well. Facility is surrounded by beautiful butterfly gardens. Cant miss, right off Hwy 77, near the school. Would love to come back.

WELL WORTH THE VISIT! Before leaving for the airport this morning the owner of the local supermarket insisted she “open up the museum” for us because she saw how interested I was in local culture and history. She was super excited to open up the whole place just for us to inspect and enjoy, and let her do some storytelling!Oakland Nebraska was originally settled by Swedish immigrants in the 1800’s and the culture remains the cornerstone of the towns identity today. A lot of this area of Nebraska has Swedish roots, but in Oakland they are especially proud of the heritage and history. In a building that was once the local church they have converted it into what is now known as the “Swedish Heritage Center” but it might as well be called the “Oakland Town Museum” because it serves the same function. Most of the items inside have been donated by families and residents of the area over the years, and are proudly maintained and arranged by the museums curators. Today our guide was Julie, who also owns the towns only grocery store, Nelson’s Food Pride. Nelson’s has been around forever, and she’s the 5th family owner, a direct descendent of the founder, her great great grandfather.Im sincerely honored to have strangers welcome us so kindly into their community and share what matters to them with us. Epic!

This is a great place to visit. If you have any Swedish ancestors in the midwest, you should make it a point to stop here. Tom is the curator and tour guide, and is eager to answer any question you may have. I am planning a second visit so that I can spend more time researching my Swedish family history.

Went for the chicken salad; stayed for the tour with Tom. Inspirational stories, many of his own families, and so many items of interest. Take the time and see it all. Great time!
