Apparently they’d rather animals live their life in a shelter than have a home with adequate experience and income to re home one. Got denied because I told them only way I’d consider letting a cat outside would be with a leash and a harness. Sad to see a bunch of animals live their life in a cage because of the ignorance of the people running the shelter.

looks Matter!
UPDATE: as of 08/11/2024
Tried to take my hound dog to their rescue and speak to them In person. Still refuse to take this dog even though I told them that he and our other dog do not get along and will end up hurting one another. He is not an aggressive animal but he and our other dog just simply do not get along. They just told me sorry and to try Lincoln or Omaha. Lincoln says that they aren't taking any surrenders and Omaha is saying the same thing. So no one is willing to help with a surrender but if I lied and said that I found him they would have to take him. Also they asked what his breed is and when told he is a Coonhound they proceed to immediately say that they have no room and hounds are hard to rehome. All their animals are hard to rehome when they put so very strict requirements to adopt from them. I was also informed that they are taking in 6 dogs today from another place out near Grand island even though they have been aware that we need a new home for this dog. What a slap in the face and such an unwillingness to help their own community. Laughable rescue it's more like a selective rescue.
Giving a one star review because I have been trying to re-home my coonhound as he and our other dog stopped getting along about 2 years ago. After many attempts to correct the behavior it is time to surrender him however hearts united claimed they had no room and to wait a few weeks. After waiting I called back and was told the same that they didn't have any room. When pressed they admitted to having room for stray dogs but were unwilling to take my surrender. Absolutely blown away that a animal rescue is so unwilling to help an animal in need, extremely disappointed in them.

HUA you really need to put on your website no fence, do not waste your time filling out an application. Maybe instead of being worried about a fence, you should be worried about the care a person can provide and understanding breeds of dogs and the care they will need as they get older. It has taken me over two years since I lost Rocky to start looking again. I am again heartbroken. I see in your comments we are not the only one who has been let down! I now know why breeders are still in business. I have attached a picture to show how well our baby was taken care of. I will make it my mission to let friends and family know about the blanket email you sent instead of reaching out and even discussing with the possibility with us.

Hearts United for Animals is a truly caring place where dogs are the first priority. They do so much to help dogs in need, and they are a real gem for the community. They even do low cost spay/neuter surgeries. They are helpful to rescue organizations, and have withstood the test of time. Keep up the great work, HUA!

I tried to adopt a dog through HUA years ago...they denied mt because I didn't have a fenced in yard. It all worked out though...because I adopted a 3 month old mutt that was the love of our life... She was one lucky dog and we were the greatest recipients of her loveable nature. HUA....they don't seem to want to work with anyone. This was 13 years ago...hopefully they've changed ?

Shelter was very clean and staff is friendly. I took 2 of my dogs to get fixed here recently and they’ve both healed up perfectly, they provide incredibly low cost spaying/neutering as well as shots to help more people with a service that can get extremely pricey extremely quickly.
Also, I respect the fact that they’re picky when choosing homes, maybe if some of you learned more about WHY they require fenced in yards and for people to meet certain criteria they wouldn’t be so judgmental. Not a home owner? Well, your next apartment might have breed restrictions that put an animal back in their hands or on the streets. It’s a valid concern. Didn’t take YOUR dog, but will take a stray? Cool, be a responsible owner and look elsewhere (Facebook, NextDoor, friends and family, etc) I can’t fathom being upset with a shelter for not taking an animal due to the Owners ignorance, but yet being upset that they’re willing to make room for one who could die without them. Highly recommend that those complaining about that criteria go watch Pitbulls and Parolees, that show IS NOT comparable to this shelters set up/staff, in any way, but it may help gain visual insight on why they are picky. It’s not just them.
Thank you HUA, you’re doing a genuine service to the community in both properly vetting families, and helping stop cats and dogs from reproducing at a price anyone can afford.

I adopted two dogs in the past, and my experiences were wonderful. The first boy was an adult, very strong-willed, and Carol Wheeler made sure that I had the personality to keep him in line. After 4 days, she believed me; Eddie and I had a fantastic connection, and he knew he was coming home with me. He was the most intelligent dog I have ever had, and everyone loved him. Even though he had a wonderful personality, he didn't care for loud and rambunctious children. I taught children to move with care and not yell and scream around him. He got along with them well, with those guidelines.
After I lost Eddie, I got a little girl to be a friend to Eddie's soulmate, Ellie, who was rescued from a breeder. I took home Desilu (Dilly at HUA), and she was so sweet. HUA did a great job in selecting Desi to be a friend to Ellie.
I have made HUA the beneficiary on a couple of policies for making me happy with my children.

I reach out about adoption requirements because I live in an apartment. I was told to apply, but then I was immediately denied because I live in an apartment. Don’t waste your time on their application if you live in an apartment. They deny you.

I lost my 13 year old boy at the beginning of the year to a terrible disease. I was finally ready to venture out and look for a new doggy to love on at home! I looked at multiple different humane society’s and unfortunately chose HUA to submit my application to.
Upon completing my application, I didn’t hear back from anyone for over a week, finally reached out via phone and they were confused why I never received an email from the adoption committee. A few hours go by, and I’m now all of a sudden “not eligible” to adopt a dog because I have a toddler at home?? HUH?!?
you’re telling me that the PUPPY I was interested in may not get along with children? But yet, that puppy MIGHT and you never gave my family that chance. If these are your super strict guidelines, maybe you should have had them listed on your website to read before starting the application.
I had my hopes up to have another 4 legged friend running around my home again, so I’m highly disappointed in the lack of communication on your end.
I also read through the individual descriptions of the dogs I had on my application, and not a single one stated “not comfortable around toddlers” which is why I chose to view those specific animals.

Wonderful shelter filled with a caring staff. Facilities where pets are housed are spacious and clean.
