I used to like this clinic, then it was bought by a corporation. No longer is there a vet on call after hours, instead you are directed to go to a place in Merriam, KS. I feel like the exams when your pet isn’t well could be more thorough. My concern is with a corporation owning it the focus is no longer on the care for the animal but rather on the amount of money to be made. My dog is no longer with us and I honestly believe it’s due to the exam was not thorough so the real underlying issue was not identified and we lost our dog a week later.

I have used this place for over 20 years. I have always loved it but recently I called and my dog was having an emergency. It was a Saturday morning but when I called she told me they did not have any appointments open. I needed to wait until Monday or take her somewhere else. It feels more like a business and not like the compassion and care I felt when I used to being my pets here.

My 11 year old Maltese named Daisy had a very large lump on her neck which seemed to suddenly appear early Friday morning. I immediately called Plattsburg Animal Clinic and they got her right in. Daisy saw Dr. Schaeffer who completed a thorough exam and completed a small needle biopsy. Dr. Schaeffer at this point felt it was a problem with Daisy’s salivary gland. Dr. Schaeffer also mentioned Daisy’s teeth being dirty and possibly some teeth would need to be pulled. On Friday Dr. Schaeffer gave her antibiotics and steroids to treat the swollen gland. We also made an appointment for the following Monday (today) to get Daisy’s teeth cleaned and she ultimately had 6 pulled. Over the weekend the size of the lump decreased by about 50%. We just picked Daisy up and the anesthesia and the procedures (also had a large lipoma removed from her back) went very well… we will have to wait and see how to proceed with the salivary gland as Daisy has not finished the steroids and antibiotic medications as of yet… Dr. Schaefer is a very knowledgeable, kind and empathetic veterinarian. I would highly recommend her to any of my family or friends. The support staff and front desk personnel were also amazing. We are home safe & sound…Thank you Dr. Schaefer!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT! I repeat do not bring your dogs here for any type of surgerie. My dog had an obstruction and i took him there to have surgery. Roman went in alert, tail wagging and walking. They did a barium study, located the obstruction and went forward w surgery. When I picked him up he was incoherent to the point of not walking, regurgitating bile, and had blood coming out of his nose. They told me he was in bad shape and recommended that I take him to the emergency vet. I asked them to leave his catheter in so the er vet didn’t have to place one. They told me he never had a catheter placed during his ABDOMINAL surgery! First red flag. They also sent me home w $300 of oral meds and a bag of fluids. I’m not sure how I was supposed to give a dog meds orally when he’s literally dying. Second red flag. Plattsburg animal hospital told me they couldn’t locate the obstruction in his stomach or intestines and that everything seemed ok as far as his insides. So we went to the er vet and by the time we got there he was on his way to the rainbow bridge. I held my sweetest boy while he took his last breath. It was heart breaking. ? the er vet on call was puzzled as to why he had passed this way so quickly and recommended an autopsy. I agreed. They found the obstruction right away and noted 13 inches of dead intestine tissue. Also, they could not find an incision on the stomach itself. Something happened to my dog at plattsburg animalClinic!. I dont know what but there was some kind of negligence. I called them a few days later to ask if i could bring the $300 worth of meds back and they told me absolutely and i would be refunded on my care credit card. Fast forward to today, i go there to return the 300 worth of meds and they deny me that. Then I asked why my dog had no catheter during an abdominal surgery, and they had no answers. Just said, “you signed paperwork.” The receptionist ended up telling me to leave while the doctor hid around the corner like a coward. As I left I said, “well, thanks for killing my dog I guess!” This receptionist answered, “YOUR WELCOME!!” How horrible.I cannot believe a veterinary practice would be so uncaring and say something like that. I’ve worked in the vet field for 10 years and no matter how upset someone gets, you should never say something like that. Please please please, consider this before taking your dog or any animal to this place for anything more than vaccines. They are not equipped with the knowledge or empathy to do extensive surgeries or talk to people who have lost a pet after they do a botched procedure. I am in shock and at a loss as to how they could treat someone that way. 10/10 would not recommend!!

My recent interaction with this veterinary clinic was disappointing due to several concerning incidents. During my attempt to inquire about prescription refills, I encountered a lack of professionalism from the front desk staff. The initial clerk seemed unable to provide basic information and interrupted our conversation by placing me on hold without notice.
Subsequently, another staff member joined the call with an unprofessional demeanor, accusing me of using inappropriate language towards the previous clerk. This allegation was false, and instead of addressing the situation maturely, the staff member continued to act disrespectfully and abruptly ended the conversation.
The overall conduct displayed by the staff members involved was disappointing and unbecoming of a professional environment. If a respectful and courteous atmosphere is a priority when seeking veterinary care, I would advise considering alternative clinics.

The very best vet, hands down! We take our pets to see Dr. Schaeffer. I was so glad I found her after she moved from Holt Animal Clinic. Very caring and very thorough. Figured out how to help our dog when other vets couldn't. I know we got extra time with Buddy because of it, and they were the so wonderful when it came time to let him go. I can't thank them enough! We will continue to take our pets there and recommend them to everyone!

I just love taking my dogs here because they are so loving and caring for each and every one of them. When I had to put my little fur baby down they gave me as much time as I needed which was so comforting because this was the first pet I had lost. Thank you for helping me through this difficult situation! Ginny❤️
