I think they are definitely a scam... I visited them a few days ago, and I decided to go for it and got ready to pay the security deposit. The landlord Michael Zhang suggested using paypal to pay for that. So I paid it and chose "Good and Service", so the paypal charged him about $6 processing fee. He was unhappy about it. So he decided to give me refund on PayPal. When the refund was pending, I said I can't pay you again today, I would come next week to pay you and sign. So I didn't pay anything, didn't sign any contract. I just told him I don't want to take the apartment right now, and he said he would collect $575 +$6 from me, if he didn't receive these money, he would file it to the court and sue me... This is definitely a scam and threatening. if you have no choice beside this apartment, please do take extra caution when working with them.

On 1/12/2024, I drove from Columbia MO to view an apartment at 1106 Jefferson St, Jefferson City, MO 65101, that I had scheduled a week in advance to view at noon. I schedule the apartment tour with property owner Christine Zhang through the Zillow platform. I was so excited to view the apartment because I exceeded all the requirements. The requirements are a credit score of 625 or better, a monthly income of $2000 or better, and no eviction records. I have a 760+ credit score, I made more than $2000, and no eviction.Upon arrival for the apartment tour. I saw an Asian man and a white woman sitting in the office. The Asian man (about 5ft5, slim built, circular face, and between the ages 60 – 75), sits behind the desk and the white woman sits in front with an empty chair beside her. Walking toward the office I could hear the Asian man talking to the white woman with a calm/soft voice. I could hardly hear what they were saying.I entered the office and said good morning, stated my name and proceeded by saying I was here to view the apartment. The Asian man replied yelling. “who are you? How do I know it's you? Can I have your ID?” I checked my pocket for my ID but it was not there. So, I said excuse me I am going to my car to get it, but before I go can I use your restroom? The Asian man said, “No, I don’t have any restroom for you to use”. However, I ran to my car grabbed my wallet that had my driver's license in it, and ran back into the building. I handed the Asian man my driver's license, he looked at it and said, “Are you an American Citizen?” I said no I am an International student. He responded, “How do I know you are a student?" I said I could pull up my I20 and my graduate assistantship letter and show you, give me a minute. I was standing the entire time while he and the white woman were sitting, even though there was an empty chair he never said you can have a seat. So, I asked him can I have a seat? The Asian man did not reply, but the white woman said, “Yes you can have a seat” so I sat down.I pulled up my graduate assistantship letter on my phone and showed it to him to prove that I was a student. I told him that he should also have the letter that I showed him because I had already submitted this information. He follows up by asking if I have rented elsewhere before. I said yes, I have rented from my coach and I have rented from an apartment complex before. Before I finished the sentence he cut me off by talking over me, “I don’t want to hear anything about your coach!” with a very firm and strong voice. I replied with a soft voice that my coach has a housing business. Before I finished my sentence he cut me off by talking over me. He repeats, “I don’t want to hear anything about your coach” with a straight face and a yelling voice. He continues by saying, “Give me the apartment complex you have rented from before, and not your coach number”. I did give him the apartment complex number. I also tried to call the apartment complex myself because I know that I have nothing on my record to be ashamed of. After I gave him the number he said, you can go, I will get back to you when I verify the information. I walked out of the office then I remembered that the purpose of being there was to view the apartment. I walked back inside and said can I view the apartment? He yelled and said, “No, I will get back after I verify your information".However, I already paid to have my background check done and the application fee. They have all or most of the information they need. But refused to show me the apartment. The entire time I was in his office I felt judged, dismissed, and unheard. He made me feel less than a human. I had to defend myself all the time.On the other hand, he talked with the white tenant with a softer tone and he looked at her when talking. I feel I was discriminated against because I am black.

Christine Zhang told me I didn’t meet the 2000$ income criteria which was false and once I called her out on that being false she told me my 88% payment history was high risk and I was also high risk because I had a medical bill in collections the criteria only stated no evictions, 2000$ minimum income and 625 credit score and I meet all of the criteria. Definitely a terrible experience.

They definitely seem like they're just trying to scam people.I've been looking for a place to live and I've been contacting Mike about an apartment in the Camelot complex. For one, it was hard as all hell to even reach the office. I had like 6 different phone numbers given to me and at one point, they were texting me from the number I was supposed to call, but wouldn't answer. Mike kept arguing about my credit score. (if you're an apartment manager, you should be able to read a credit score.) he kept trying to tell me I had 10k in collections, which wasn't true. i have 1k in collections and a car loanand then he said he would give me the apartment If the person that had already given him the deposit doesn't show up. If you have a deposit from someone, why are you talking to someone else for the same place?

I was approved for an apartment so I sent a security deposit through Zelle and emailed the landlord and the manager the confirmation number. Then the landlord threatened to give the apartment to someone else if he didn't receive the deposit by a certain date - even though I had already given him the confirmation number. I started digging and found some very negative reviews about the landlord and the manager, so I told them I don't want to rent from them and asked for my deposit back. I have not signed a lease. Let me repeat that - I have NOT signed a lease. The landlord emailed me stating he would refund my money when it deposits into his account. My bank notified me that the funds were deposited into his account, but he has not refunded my money. Now he has stopped responding to my emails. Do yourself a favor. Unless you like having hundreds of dollars stolen, stay away from this apartment complex!

This is my 2nd negative review for this company. My brother was asked to renew his lease w/ a increase of rent and the deposit. I'm fine with the fact of there being an increase for both. However, Christy (Property Manager) was careless in her records/documentation. She wrote in some additives on the lease and he signed. Later, she emails telling me he needs to pay a larger amount for his deposit. She also didn't mention anything about the deposit/deposit change when first reaching out. She simply just informed about a rent increase. VERY unprofessional, rude and disorganized. Then she threatens in another email to terminate the new lease if add'l monies wasn't paid for the deposit. After my last reply, then she sends an email telling me she would send me the original lease by email. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! Definitely scam artist.

This is a semi-late review, this all started in April. I went in and gave Ms. Zhang $25 and didn't hear anything about being approved. I don't even think she processed it. I went ahead and got an apartment with Hawthorne, who was awesome. Then the tornado hits and takes out my apartment, and I got put in a place by Friendly Leasing. She then calls me a few days later offering for me to apply again, and pay another $25 to apply.Long story short, don't get a place here. The building manager either doesn't care about their job or she's actively trying to scam people, and taking advantage of people's misfortune. I welcome her to contest any of this information. Cease and desist letters can be sent to 505 Ellis Blvd C48, Jefferson City, MO, 65101.

New ownership as of Jan/Feb 2018. Mike & Christine Zhang are both very rude and unprofessional. They don't return calls/emails. They provided inaccurate mailing address so I had to stop payment on my check twice and pay fees for that. Mike still charged me late fees due to him not providing a good mailing address. My sibling has rented here for 18 yrs and never once had any landlord issues until Mike/Christine took over. Mike also doesn't have adequate help around the facility. Therefore, he is basically trying to conduct all repairs and upgrades to the facility himself; which takes him forever to get around to. He's cheap and is trying to save money and do the work himself. I'd recommend anyone that is thinking of renting an apartment from the owner of Camelot Apartments not to.You will be very disappointed if you do.
