The experience was great! The staff was accommodating and Dr. Parker was great. I was in and out in no time. I could tell a difference in my vision immediately after the procedure.

Dr. Parker and his staff were absolutely outstanding! I had said for years and years that I did not think I would be able to do Lasik surgery. I wish now I had done it sooner. I would recommend this procedure to anyone and everyone that qualifies. I cannot express how outstanding the staff at Eyecare Specialist was from my first appointment through post-op. They and Dr. Parker are absolutely the best!

Advice for future LASIK patients:
- Research the laser, the VISX S4 provides wavefront-guided LASIK. Data indicates that topography-guided LASIK may produce fewer aberrations (leading to starbursts, halos and glare) when compared to wavefront-guided LASIK.
- Seek opinions from multiple ophthalmologists. Your eyes are debatably your most precious sensory organ. It is worth your time and energy to do your homework.
- Consider opting for surgery at an academic institution where the ophthalmologist won’t directly benefit from you having surgery. Ophthalmologists that are salaried at an institution have no financial gain to encourage you to seek surgery.
I had LASIK from Dr. Parker in September 2022. I chose this practice because I went to high school with Dr. Parker’s kids and felt like I could trust him more than an ophthalmologist in the St. Louis area. However, prior to surgery, it was not disclosed to me that larger pupil size would increase my risk for adverse effects. Had I known this information beforehand, I would have never opted to have surgery. While I ended up with 20/20 vision, I have not been able to drive at night since the procedure due to starbursts/halos/glare. I brought this issue up at multiple follow-up appointments. Dr. Parker attributed the LASIK-induced complications to congenital cataracts (even though I didn't have any night vision issues prior to LASIK). He didn’t offer any solutions for the halos or glare, nor did he refer me to another provider that might be able to help me.
I sought out a second opinion at Wash U in STL. Dr. Wexler found that my eye had aberrations as a result of the LASIK and the aberrations were causing my starbursts/halos/glare at night. I tried brimonidine eye drops in hopes of helping with the glare to no avail. I'm likely going to have to have PRK or scleral lenses to see at night anymore (both $5,000+ treatments and an additional surgery would come with more risks). If I could go back in time, I would opt not to have refractive surgery at all. I would do anything to get my life back. Not being able to drive at night starting at age 26 has taken a great toll on my quality of life, mental health and social life. I can no longer drive after 5 PM in the winter, see the stars or moon, Christmas lights, etc. I also had to quit my sand volleyball league due to the lighting. LASIK has not only changed my vision, but my outlook on life.
Note: Dr. Parker and staff did offer to have me schedule an additional appointment to have a consultation for LASIK enhancement. However, I don't live in Cape and I brought up my complications at previous appointments with no solutions offered. Also, there are risks involved with re-lifting the LASIK flap. Data indicates that my best option for my night vision complications is topography-guided PRK, which this office doesn’t offer.
I’m a pharmacist and am very disappointed with how my severe complications were handled by Dr. Parker and his practice. As a pharmacist, if one of my patients had an adverse effect, I’d definitely reach out to them and help them troubleshoot solutions. If I couldn’t help the patient myself, I’d refer them to someone who could. Also, I’d report the complications to the FDA and drug manufacturers. That would be the absolute bare minimum that I would expect from any physician or pharmacist.

It’s all about your eyes, so things can get tense, but the quality of service and the ability for the doctor to tell you what to expect, what is going to happen and how to alleviate fears and worries. I was told ahead of time the limits of LASIK and what it could do for me. Let me put it this way, I can see, I can read without glasses. The process was completely painless with some minor discomfort.
