This is certainly worth finding, if you're looking for a decent, not expensive meal downtown.
Only reason I gave it an overall 4 stars is, in this day and age, 99% of places take credit cards or checks.
This amazing place... does not. Understandable, due to how cards or checks can bounce, but I was unaware by going on what was on the photos on here.
There is a ATM nearby, about a block away, but just so ya'll out-of-towners comin' to our sweet town know, have cash on ya!

A hidden gem.
When we walked in the manager David greeted us at the front door with a print of a painting of his restaurant by local artist Bobby Waters . David had seen me taking pics of his building and asked if I'd like to have one of the prints. He said Bobby was eating lunch there and would we like to meet him.
Of course we said and David walked us back to the last booth where Bobby greeted us like old lost friends. For the next fifteen minutes or so Bobby told us his story of growing up in Hattiesburg and how he became a painter.
David joined us and told us the history of the restaurant and the families who had owned it.
To sum it up the food was really good by the company and fellowship is something from a lost time.
Do yourself a favor, go meet David and if you're lucky you might get to meet Bobby too.

Step through the doors and back in time. The food was just like you'd expect at a dinner made with love and tradition. The pancakes are huge and so so good. They will make your taste buds smile. Make sure you stop by when you're in town. A true hidden gem.

Coney Island Cafe, located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is a beloved local institution that has been serving the community for over a century. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1923, when Greek immigrant Arthur Fokakis established the eatery to offer delicious, affordable food to the people of Hattiesburg. His son, Arthur Fokakis Jr., later took over the business and it is now owned and operated by a fourth generation of the Fokakis family. Over the years, Coney Island Cafe has become a cherished part of the city's fabric, known for its warm, inviting atmosphere, friendly service, and tasty cuisine. The restaurant's interior has a classic diner feel, with booths, vintage memorabilia, and a long counter where you can watch them work their magic in the kitchen. The menu at Coney Island Cafe is a nice mix of American dishes, all made fresh. Some of the most popular items include their signature Coney Island hot dogs, hand-cut curly fries, blue plate specials, and an array of breakfast favorites like hot cakes, and omelets. The lunch menu features a variety of regular and open faced sandwiches, BBQ on a bun, and burgers. Read more about their recent 100th celebration: Bottom line: It's old and worn but it's comfy and relaxed with hot fresh food, what's not to like! I’m in my mid 40s I grew up downtown Hattiesburg are here a lot growing up.
Came here twice in the past 6 months
To remember the good food
Experience one
Food was ok
Fry’s undercooked
I didn’t get my gravy for my sandwich
Told the lady
She said cook would have to make some more
Never got my gravy
Never got my bill
Lady was to busy talking to someone
Waited 10 minutes so
I just figured out about what i should owe and added a few dollars for a tip and left
Today
Let’s try it again
Food was ok again
Got one napkin
Ran out of drink
Waitress finally came asked me what I needed
Told her
She brought me more napkins
No drink
So I finished my meal
Still with no refill
But I got my check this time
Went to the bathroom a little disappointed in this visit
After seeing the bathroom it makes since
I guess after other owners died or retired
Who ever took over doesn’t care
Because this bathroom is horrible
You don’t have to be profitable
To clean
After really looking around the restaurant
All floors are like that
See mounds of dirt
Etc
Just laziness
I hope whoever the owner is reads this
This is my honesty
Sorry bud or mam

Went in craving a great hotdog and burger. What a gem this turned out to be! The burger had chili that is made in a copper pot that original owner brought back from Patmos (where Revelation was written) over 100 years ago. The hot dog is brined and then deep fried. Everything was delicious. The manager was so helpful, informative and proud of Hattiesburg. Great experience that deserves visits!

I've never been to Hattiesburg nor ever had a Coney Island original hamburger (chili, pickles, mustard, patty and cheese). It's gotta say, I loved the burger! This is a true, original, hole in the wall place to grab a bite to eat. It's over 100+ years old in this same location with the SAME family (passed down from Greek immigrant "original owner" down to each son) Some pretty cool history!

If you have the opportunity to stop in and eat, do it. Nothing fancy, just good food at reasonable rates. Fries are made in house.
