They told me my dog was riddled with cancer and had no quality of life and only agreed to give her back to me when I agreed to make an appointment with our vet to put her down. When I took her to our vet the following week he said without expensive testing there is no way to know if she has cancer. He also said she eats and goes to the bathroom when and where appropriate and she can get up and down - it was his recommendation to NOT end her life yet

We found the same dog 2x in the last 2 weeks running around without a collar or anything, so we swooped her up in my van and got her to the shelter. Where the staff was great! She was friendly, helpful and reassuring. Even tonight when it was a police officer that came to take her in, since they are closed on Saturdays, was very nice and respectful of us and the dog. I'm so glad there is a safe place to help those escape artist dogs out there!

I was pretty disappointed to learn that the Duluth animal shelter doesn't have a website nor do they allow adoptions. I also was not asked to fill out paperwork on an animal I found and have to drive back there two separate times to then bring the animal into their care. There was plenty of notice given on the type of animal, it's current condition, where it was found, etc. Upon arriving the 2nd day, thank God I brought some fresh food with, the cage had not been set up at all and upon placing the lost or abandoned animal into the cages, it's legs splayed out from underneath it, as it was a stainless steel cage, and the animal couldn't gain traction and continued slipping. I'm sure this was creating panic for it. Not to mention I had hauled it 2 days in a row after verifying a time even. It was extremely hot hot out and I felt as though my ac was certainly not sufficient enough. Then to top it off, after not filling out a single bit of paperwork, not answering a single question, just shooed out the door as the poor animal was now starting to flop about in the slippery cage, the employee was eating the fresh food I had brought to for the animal. Standing at the registration counter as I backed out of the lot. Eating fresh food that was opened already and could have made anyone sick but the employee was clearly visible to both myself and my daughter and not just as we backed out but even while we drove past the building.Meanwhile the animal had not been provided any water, food, hide, litter pan, or anything other than an empty slippery stainless steel cage. Extremely rude and uncaring individuals that work there to both humans but most tragic to the animals. I really wish I would have just held onto the animal myself and searched until I found it's owner. With no website or social media page how will the word get out about the animals that are unfortunate enough to wind up in their care? Well it won't and nor are they willing to give you options on adopting the animal after the holding time has passed. Instead I'm told they ship these animals mainly to the cities and generally not for many months and then who knows where they go. But with no sharing of information as it pertains to animals I their care and also with no hope of keeping them in the area the possibility of any animal ever making it back to their owner is slim to none. I'm shocked this shelter has not had an investigation on their practices, policies, procedures. Because it clearly is doing zero good for the northland. ZERO.
