“Energy is a complex market and our coop (I'm a member) does a good job overall. The last outage I had was over a year ago and it was for less than an hour. It was caused by my neighbor's transformer failing and they had a crew there within an hour and a new transformer delivered and installed within approximately 3 hours. They re-routed the power somehow so only my neighbor was out for the whole time. Reliability and customer service are Beltrami Electric's strengths. Outages are short and infrequent, maybe two outages per year, lasting five minutes at most and if you call them with an issue, they are always friendly and willing to help.
Pricing and off-peak control are the two biggest issues I see with the coop. Neither of these are easy to fix, mainly because of regulatory overreach in Minnesota. Our state actually has a law that says the coop must spend our money to encourage members to conserve energy. What is more ridiculous than requiring an organization that sells electricity, to try to reduce the amount of product they sell. Obviously they shouldn't encourage waste, but how about new and exciting electrical lights, appliances, tools, toys, etc, and charging less per kilowatt-hour, the more electricity you use.
The off-peak program is another issue that can't easily be addressed because new power plants are not being built when needed. I get an approximately 50% discount on any electricity used by my off-peak devices, but they can be shut off at inconvenient times. I think it is a great way to save money, but because of the energy policies in our country, the frequency and duration of the shut-off periods keeps going up. Let's build a nuclear plant or two in North Dakota since Minnesota is so bad, politically.”
