6/21/24: Waaaaaay better experience this time around. New female staff member (manager??) greeted me as soon as I entered the store. I was looking for some items to put together for a retirement gift basket for a gentleman at work who is very into cars. I gave her these details and she suggested a number of items that would work for my objective. Great experience. I'm glad things have improved. Thank you madam!
ORIGINAL REVIEW: This is an interesting place. It's near my house and I have been here enough times to get a sample selection of what their customer service boils down to as someone who has worked in in-person and over-the-phone (call center) customer service capacities. And that professional diagnosis would be: Mostly Marginal. If that.
I think part of the top-down, enforced directive is to see how long an associate can avoid acknowledging a customer until it is absolutely unavoidable. They must have a monthly contest going on.
Today I go in to see about their Free Check Engine Light Service. I have never used it before, but I've been to these sorts of auto retail places for various items enough times. I also have worked retail and have a sense. I don't expect anyone to be a mechanic and diagnose a vehicle problem or direct me in solving it. I just wanted the technical information this free diagnosis could offer me so I could make the best informed product purchase or repair decision. I am assuming this is the precise reason this free "diagnostic" service is offered.
It was incredibly telling that the older gentleman who finally attended to me ended up grabbing one of the diagnostic units and proceeded to give me the most vaguest rundown on how to use it/stick it my car. Then directed me to bring it back inside so that they could pull the codes, if any.
Based on that, I already knew the level of apathy I was dealing with was pretty high. I had zero interest in pursuing any further effort on the part of that associate. I figured I'd YouTube what I needed to know out in the parking lot to get I needed to do done.
What was even more interesting was that another male customer was apparently observing this whole interaction and followed me out in the parking lot to assist me with hooking up the diagnostic unit to my vehicle. He relayed he was confused as he never saw that happen before and he seemed way more in the know than me. My 7 year old even tried to tip this guy $5 from his birthday money for helping us out which was unexpected and hilarious. But that just goes to show you the disparate and palpable level of the helping (the certain type of?) customer mentality at this location.
I actually went to the AAP competitor location up the road beforehand so I had the immediate experience of contrast. The young man who helped me immediately after inquiring about the service readily grabbed the diagnostic device, asked a couple of quick, relevant questions, and got down to the business of 'getting 'er done'. I even appreciated his efficiency of having me take photos of the codes and his honesty(?) about purchasing certain items likely being a waste of money based on the explaineld situation. A situation I did research the probable cause online beforehand and wanted the diagnostic data on to formulate a better actionable picture.
I did appreciate that this AutoZone gave me a printout of the resulting codes vs. the taking the picture with my phone thing, but everything else about the service and care for the casual auto parts customer here is incredibly lackluster. I was prepared to make some purchases too just to see what could help, if anything.
My gut tells me this is all a hyper-culture management problem based on the consistency of the behaviors I've observed and encountered. I plan to share this experience and review with their corporate office. They can pull all the 11/3/22 late afternoon came

I had an issue with my battery. I called ahead and Momo graciously let me know that a battery for my car was available and could be installed in my car. When I got there Levi installed it for me. Very helpful, kind and understanding when I was not having a good day.
Thank you

Darius saved us! Truck battery completely dead at a VRBO and we had a 7 hour drive in front of us. AAA couldn't help until the next day. Darius, at AutoZone on Dixie Hwy in Waterford, found me the right battery and all the tools and parts my daughter and I would need to install it from a picture. We couldn't get the last bolt tightened, so when we returned the old battery, he fixed it for us. Also installed new windshield wipers on my daughter's vehicle that I'd broken trying to scrape. Big winter storm, snow and ice everywhere, below zero-temps, Darius should wear a cape. Thank you so much for your amazing customer service!
