I'm not one to write bad reviews but when you hang the elderly out to dry, that's pathetic and shameful. John has been doing my parents taxes for years. In fact, I was the one who referred my parents to him. We followed him from Donna Baker to his new firm. BUT, in the future, we will never use him again.
My mom (in her 70’s) had submitted her complete tax documents to him in Feb 2024 and for some reason he had to file an extension for her simple 1040EZ. What the heck?! Fast forward to today, almost November 2024, and my mom STILL does not have her refund!!! (I have so many questions about that, but that's not even my main issue.)
My main reason for this review is the following. My dad passed in August 2024, AND at the same time, my mom had some fraudulent activity concerning her tax return (with scammers), so as she’s navigating through this horrible mess AND grieving over the loss of her best friend of 60 years. Over the course of a few months, my mom has tried numerous times to get in touch with John for his support, asking him firstly, where's her tax refund, and secondly, to please submit a form on her behalf to the IRS to help clean up the fraudulent issues. After calling him repeatedly, she was finally able to speak with him and he told her he would submit the form on her behalf. To-date, he has not.
She finally took action and submitted the form herself (after having to spend hours waiting on-hold for the IRS, to get the instructions she needed, that John could have provided very easily)
All she needed him to do was send one form in to the IRS for her, and answer a few other pressing questions, but he still won’t call her back or send the form in as he said he would. Even after explaining about the recent death of her husband (in the voicemails she’s left him) he's ghosting her.
I truly cannot believe the lack of support, and the utter lack of compassion & mercy he’s shown my mom, who, like I said has been a longstanding client.
And my mom STILL does not have her tax refund. 8 months after turning her simple 1040EZ in to John. It’s shameful. Do better John.

Fantastic service, excellent communication, and overall a wonderful experience working with John and his staff. He is very knowledgeable and aware of the ever-changing tax laws. He has educated me on various strategies to put more money in my pocket... which is great! I would recommend him to all of my friends and family members.

5 years and Never again. You stood there and lied to me. Always very professional in the past not sure what happened Mr. Benzing. I've referred several friends and family to you. The simple sorry, it took longer then expected would have been great.You chose to lie and tell me if I don't like your service find someone else. Will do. Maybe, I'll take a few friends with me. Good luck

I hesitated to write this review, because it's a small town, and I always try to support local businesses over big name commercial businesses, but at the end of the day, I wasn't treated like a valued client. I was audited by the IRS for my 2018 taxes, which I paid Mr. Benzing hundreds of dollars, and waited over six months for him to complete for me. The IRS claims I owe them over $3000. I attempted to contact Mr. Benzing multiple times over the course of a year, and never received a full response. I'd get an email or a phone call here and there, but never a resolution to the problem. He simply refused to make my issue a priority, and refused to stand behind his work, and correct the mistakes he made on my taxes. Now that the IRS kept my refund this year to pay for his uncorrected mistakes, it's fresh in my mind that I'll never trust Benzing Abbott Tax & Accounting to help me with my taxes again.

John is very knowledgeable and eager to help make tax time and filing as painless as possible. He is always willing to answer all of our questions and pass along pertinent tax updates as needed year to year. Highly recommend, 5 stars.

I've used Benzing Tax for 4 years without issue. This year I received a letter from my City stating taxes were due from 2017. While it's true I did not know I was required to pay a City Tax, it's reasonable that a professional tax preparer would know and make the client aware. When I notified John of the letter from the city and asking for help to resolve this I was ghosted. He stated he would get back in touch the following week and never did. I did try to reach him by phone but no response. Obviously I'm moving my business elsewhere as this has cost me in penalty, late fees, and the cost of having 4 years of returns amended with the City. My point is be sure you know what you need done and don't expect any assistance from Benzing because you will be left high and dry to deal with any issues that come up by yourself. I cannot recommend this firm.

John has been doing my taxes for 8 years. He does a wonderful job and goes the extra mile often working behind the scenes and late hours to make sure that when complicated issues come up, he resolves them for you. Oftentimes he’s on the phone with the IRS or searching tax laws to make sure that the issues are resolved in a timely fashion and that they are done correctly! He’s also very reasonable!

According to the IRS, our AGI was reported incorrectly, which has caused a significant delay on our tax refund. It has been FOUR MONTHS... still no refund. The two times I called to inquire, I did not receive a call back. Good customer service is a MUST, and I shouldn't have to keep calling just because my preparer can't make time to return my calls.
UPDATE: We only received our refund after talking with an IRS Tax Advocate. DEFINITELY unsatisfied.

We were very disappointed with this business. Mr. Benzing made an honest mistake on our 2017 taxes. We took the mistake info from the IRS to him in Oct. 2019. Instead of admitting an honest mistake he lied to us twice telling us that we didn’t give him all of the information and documents in our folder didn’t match his. Everything we took to him in 2017 was in our folder. He had a copy of all items in his file as well. He also stated he called us to pick up our file but he never did call us. His winter hours were not posted and the business was rarely open early or late. I would recommend going elsewhere.
