Grand Mere State Park is a quiet, secluded piece of Lake Michigan shoreline with few visitors. It features an excellent variety of hiking trails, from a giant sand dune to timber-covered ravines and ridges, along with small inland lakes and marshland. The walk to the clean, not heavily used beach is a good hike from the parking lot, about half to three-quarters of a mile, involving large sand dunes and hills. The path can be moderate, uphill on hot sand, and is not handicap accessible. It is perfect for solo trail blazers, hiking, and relaxing, but not the type for cooler parties or many chairs. Leashed dogs are allowed, but the hot sand requires protection for their paws. Visitors should note midsummer issues with flying insects like gnats and mosquitoes. A Michigan state park pass on the license plate provides free entry.
