Mackinac Island, where bicycles outnumber cars and fudge is practically a food group! The ferry ride to this car-free haven is like a journey to a land where time decided to take a leisurely stroll. The seagulls, probably trained in comedic timing, put on a hilarious airshow as you approach. Once there, bikes become your trusty steed, and the only traffic jam involves a family of ducks crossing the street at their own pace. The fudge shops are so abundant you start wondering if Willy Wonka moonlights on the island. So, if you fancy a vacation where the biggest decision is choosing between chocolate or peanut butter fudge, Mackinac Island and its ferry ride are your ticket to a sweet, carefree escape!

Greatest place to stay while visiting the island. Weve always had such great attention from the staff.

Not the best Michigan State Marina (and we've been to them all!), but not the worst either. Everything is in decent shape and the usual amenities are available. It is not an ideal place to do laundry (it's expensive and there's just one pair of machines) and everything you've probably heard about the ferry wakes is true; they're pretty bad and it's non-stop until the last one heads out at around 10pm. Those small things aside, this is a spectacular setting and it was well worth the stop.

The main dock is spacious, but the side docks are very thin. I was unable to get off our boat due to the height of the dock. Also, you get a lot of rocking from the continuous ferry traffic. Then there was the cannon firing from the fort and the pirate ship. For someone with PTSD it was a bit hectic at times, as it was for our dogs. But atmosphere was great.

Haven't been here in 55 years. We looked forward to the ambiance we experienced in the past. Some of that has disappeared since they now allow electric bikes for the handicapped. There must be a lot of handicapped people on the island because all you see is these things flying around. Rules are not enforced of course. Keep the horses and pedal bikes but get rid of these electric bikes or enforce the rules!

Derrick the harbormaster, and his staff are great! They are all very accommodating and hospitable. Nice facilities, which they are planning on updating this fall.

Did a weekend trip to Mackinac Island, 2 days is plenty. Keep in mind, there are NO cars, only transportation is bike riding (there are 4+ shops on the main strip that you can rent from), walking, or horse carriage. Be prepared to hop over horse poop/smell the very strong stench of it. Overall, was a good experience and I'm glad I went to get it off my bucket list, I definitely recommend bike riding all 8.2 miles around the island. The coast is beautiful/lots of flowers and trees. HUGE drawback is: I definitely noticed that the shop keepers, waiters/waitresses etc. were racist. We went to probably 15+ establishments and in more than 10 places, the employees didn't even acknowledge us. AT ALL. But would rush to others. Baffling and sad.

Bucket list island. A day trip is all you need. Get a bike or do a house tour. If you aren't used to the smell of horses get ready. After that enjoy yourself .

I LOVE MACKINAC ISLAND! BUT! Dogs should not be considered tourists from May-September. People can leave their dogs home. There is no sidewalk room with strollers even for dogs. If someone needs an emotional Animal they probably should stay home. Mackinac Island is so busy and so touristy that their emotional well-being would not be the right atmosphere for someone in that situation. I took such great care of our pets that I didn't feel I needed to take them on a vacation as well. Sue Duby MI resident

Is it a Tourist Trap? YES! But a fun and interesting tourist trap for sure! We are big fans of "Somewhere in Time" and enjoyed that aspect of the island. The no-car law was awesome! Just horses and carriages doing everything. I mean EVERYTHING. No cars at all. The shops and restaurants are fun. The main street is like going back in time. We took a 2 hour horse tour and also walked around looking at historical sites. It was great! and... the ferry ride is fun too! We recommend this "tourist trap" as a MUST SEE!
