This review would have initially started out with 4 starts, but there have been too many inconsistencies with my service. DJ is a good stylist and for the most part, personable. However, his salon lacks professionalism in both customer service and hair care. As a new client and a natural hair person, I think it's very important to do a consultation. I never received this from DJ and has to ask/prompt him about the health and progress of my hair. That didn't bother me too much. What struck me the most was his revolving door of shampoo assistants (but they do more than that, they also "silken" you out). These individuals are not licensed and apply HEAT to your hair, without understanding or knowing the frugalness or texture/amount of heat required. I've been to five appointments with DJ. Long enough to make a truly fair assessment. The first shampoo guy who has since quite, came back, and then quit again was so careless. You could just see him spacing off. He cared more about his appearance and what he planned on doing after work rather than performing adequate services. He got so much water in my ears, I had to tell him to rinse my hair out in cold water after a condition (to which he replied: "are you a stylist?" -- no, I just understand the basics around hair care), then on a second appointment, I received a steam treatment which was so half a** and the hood kept falling on my head and then it had to be propped up in such a way that most of the steam escaped and I received little to no steam whatsoever. After telling DJ, he dismissed it and charged me a whopping $40 EXTRA for the crappy steam treatment. Sad but true, I came back...it's the worst feeling going into a hair salon and not knowing what to always expect in price or quality of hair care. This time I had the very nice pregnant woman, she performed my shampoo service once before and I re-call liking the service, so I was optimistic. She did pretty good on my shampoo, but once she started detangling, she ripped through my hair with the denman brush and was yanking apart my knots, and then when she went to "silken" me out, the my scalp got burnt. I was pissed. To make matters worse, I asked DJ for a trim/dusting last appointment and he mentioned that I didn't need one. I asked again for this appointment and this appointment he said I needed more than a trim and then up-charged me $15!!! So, that's it. I'm not going back. My hair is pretty, but it's thinner. I have naturally fine hair, but with all the abuse my hair is thinner than it should be. As a salon owner and a natural hair stylist, DJ should be concerned with the level of care that is taken on his clients head. Unfortunately, I think instead of providing education per each client that his un-licensed assistance are performing chemical and heat treatments on, he's more concerned about what he's going to eat for lunch. I like DJ, he's a nice guy, but there is way too much professionalism lacking for me to EVER step foot back inside his salon.
