Was told to leave because I wasn’t a “plus member” and couldn’t shop there until 10am…. I walked in 10 minutes before 10am. Ridiculous, take your business to Costco

This branch practices racial profiling. I began a review 2 weeks ago due to the same experience that happened today. I gave myself time to cool off and then I decided not to send it. Since then, I have witnessed and experienced the same thing that I have witnessed and experienced for years. Today, the employee whom I confronted explained that Sam's Club has a new (4 months old) system that "tells them what to scan". I have shopped at this particular store for more than 15 years, in fact, around 21 years. The problem with their "new system" is the fact that over the past 21 years I have observed minorities, to include myself be treated with inequity when it comes to check-out. I have witnessed white people with carts full to the rim, (to include alcohol) only have 3 items scanned. But when a minority approaches the representative, their carts get scanned at least 4 times. Two weeks ago, I had 6 items in my cart. The store representative, Chris (balding guy) scanned the cart in front of me that had multiple items in it, 3 times. I approach him with 6 items and he scanned 4 of them. I went to my car to drop off the items and then reentered the store to return my cart. I observed him to scan two white customers carts only 3 times.Since I have been noticing this inequity for years, I ALWAYS watch what is happening before and after I check out. This has NOTHING to do with playing the race card. Initially I began watching this to make sure I was not mistaken. I confirmed that I have always been accurate in what I observed, but I never spoke up. Today, Karla, an African American representative did the same thing. She scanned the cart before me 3 times but then scanned my cart 4 times, with only 6 items. I exited the store and watched through the glass. I observed her to only scan 3 items in the next two white people's carts. Immediately I reentered the store and acknowledged that to her. I exited the store, went to drop the items off in my car and then reentered the store to return my cart. I noticed Karla and the other representative at the exit, laughing about my concern. I reentered the exit door and told the other rep, who was rude to me 3 weeks ago, that I did not appreciate what is happening. She quickly informed me that Sam's club has a new system in place (4 months) "that tells us what to do". SAM'S CLUB, even if this is true, you need to understand your new system is going to be a major problem moving forward. You need to understand that many minorities, especially African Americans, have experienced a life-time of racial discrimination and inequity. So your "new policy" will certainly lead to law suites, a major loss of business from minorities, and social conflict within our community if minorities are forced to watch white people randomly get 3 items scanned, but they are scanned 4-5 times, with the excuse being, "we have a new system in place". I have a Costco membership and will now consider a BJ's membership to avoid your store. Please don't assume that my 21 years of hard earned cash will just be a drop in the bucket for your loss of profits. I have brought this to the attention of many of my family, friends, and co-workers, who compose of all races and who are willing to join me in boycotting your branch. You need to correct this system because it breeds inequity. I have witnessed white people pulled to the side at the exit door, because they had items in their cart that they did not pay for. That has never happened to me. I have never stolen or considered stealing from yours or any store. I have never "accidentally" added an item to my cart that was not paid for. Why am I being treated this way? I don't buy the "new system" crap. And if this is the BS that you plan to stand behind to excuse the 20 years of experiences that I have observed prior to your "new system", you will need to do better. In addition to starting a boycott with the aforementioned people I mentione

I have been to Sam’s club stores across multiple states from Michigan, Ohio Pennsylvania and Arkansas. None of them have ever treated me in the manner that the Lansing location has. The Lansing store has a greeter named Karen. She has the worst attitude and demeanor towards customers. I realize they want to make certain that members have their card so they can check out without hassle. However Karen is so aggressive that she makes you feel absolutely unwelcome and unwanted. She gets in your face with contempt if you are not fast enough getting your card or if it’s not right in your hand. A past trip she tried to block me from entering the store until I produced my membership card. I had to remind her that it’s club policy that if I’m purchasing alcohol or cigarettes, I am not required to have a membership. She proceeded to scold me for not giving her what she demanded. I entered the store and she immediately radioed for someone to tail me and within minutes a guy shadowed me until I made my way to the exit. This was completely inappropriate and unprofessional. Many other negative experiences have happened between then and today. As for today she barked at me like a junkyard dog for my card even though I already had it in hand. Another member entered and showed his card but he forgot his cart. He turned back and informed her and he grabbed the cart he needed. She didn’t hesitate to berate him about how he needs to go out the exit and re-enter through the proper way. She kept on him until he actually felt the need to apologize to her! I hung around in ear shot long enough that she then felt the need to say to the woman at the service desk that “See what I have to put up with, I hate that these people can’t follow instructions “. This woman is a cancer on this store. No other greeter has ever been disrespectful in any way. She does not belong in any customer facing position. She lacks any skills that, as members we should expect. I keep the Sam’s membership for the gas station and convenience for its proximity to my house but if I’m looking to shop where my membership also buys me common courtesy and respect without getting treated like a criminal then I go to BJ’s in W Lansing.
