On October 17, 2024, I visited Harper Woods Veterinary Clinic with my dog have their anal glands expressed. Unfortunately, I experienced behavior from the staff that I found to be inappropriate and disrespectful, which is concerning for a professional setting.
During my visit, I expressed my concern to a female veterinary technician regarding my preference for a female caregiver for my dog. She assured me that she would be the one to assist. However, shortly thereafter, I overheard a staff member at the front desk make a disrespectful and public commentary about my visits, stating that I only bring him in when he is unwell. This was disheartening and felt dismissive as I am often never told by the staff how much visit will cost upfront, and previous experiences have been disheartening as I have brought him in for a physical multiple times which was never done (only treated symptoms vs listening to my multiple request for thyroid testing/blood work).
Additionally, I was approached by an very angry and aggressive veterinarian in a public area to discuss their concerns about my attempt at care (none of which emphasized their concern for my dogs health, nor did she listen to my concerns with his health and need for payment plans), which I believe should have been addressed privately. Had the roles been reversed, I would have provided a more confidential, compassionate, and considerate conversation regarding my pet's health.
I have encountered ongoing challenges at this clinic, namely a lack of respect, autonomy, care, confidentiality, compassionate, consideration, and attentiveness to my inquiries. When I call to inquire about pricing, the response is often vague, leaving me uncertain about the costs associated with care. In contrast, I recently called the Michigan Humane Society in Detroit for a full physical appointment where it was explained that they offers payment plans, and the staff listened to my concerns with empathy and a deep compassion that the staff at the Harper Woods Veterinary Clinic have EVER provided for my dog or myself. Additionally, my dog has been treated at the Michigan Humane Society in Detroit without issues, highlighting the need for more transparent communication, empathy, and compassion regarding care options and my dogs recent fear of vet offices.
I sincerely hope that both current and future patients will receive the respect, compassion, empathy, consideration, and understanding they deserve from the veterinary staff; however, I will NEVER attend the Harper Woods Veterinary Clinic again nor will I ever refer anyone to this location.
Also, it should be noted that the clinic still doesn't allow for patients to be in the room with the animals, and I have a serious questions about whether or not they have actually attempted to treat my dog during of the times I have brought him especially with their negative and aggressive behaviors.

Thank you for keeping our Winni alive. Without you, she would have died from Addison's Disease and you diagnosed her quickly and continue to keep her alive. We are very grateful. My appt was at 5:00. I was home by 5:40 and Winni had 3 shots, anal glands drained and lab work. We received a phone call te next day giving us a terrific update. She is so healthy. Dr.. Dexter was caring and compassionate. We love Harper Woods Vet!

We had a wonderful first visit. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They took the time to answer all of my questions and made my dog, Ted, feel comfortable and at ease. I was impressed by how quickly we were seen (on our appointment time) and the overall efficiency of the appointment.

Extremely rude staff on the phone. The lady who called me about my appointment had the worst attitude I’ve ever seen.

I have been going here with my rescue dog for over 5 years and have had nothing but great service. They are an extremely busy office, and it may take a day or so to get a appointment but if it is an emergency they will get you in as soon as they can. The doctors are extremely caring and thorough. They have always given my dog the best of care. I recommend them to all my family and friends.

Would give zero stars if i could. Our 3 year old mini goldendoodle came into the office lethargic and hadent eaten anything in 4 days. After one quick blood test, Dr Brooks told us it was either congenital kidney disease (incurable) or GI issues. They gave us anti nausea medication and an appetite stimulant which we had to force down our dog’s throat. I had called 3 times to schedule the ultrasound we needed, to which the team did not deem an urgent matter. We ended up going to Emergency Vet Ann Arbor and within minutes, the doctor had concluded a probable diagnosis of Addisons disease- which was confirmed a few hours later.
If we had listened to Harper Woods Vet’s plan, our dog would have died as she was in adrenal crisis- which was completely missed by Dr Brooks.
The staff was unkind in phone conversations, and did not recognize the urgency of the matter. It seems that patients are just a number and not genuinely cared for. Huge bummer to waste $300 on an incompetent visit.

My family has been coming here for nearly 30 years. I used to like them despite their higher prices. My dog recently developed allergies and was put on apoquel. 1 month supply is 120 dollars through this vet. You can get it online for about half that once you factor in promos that they offer. I ordered it and submitted my vet information. They attempted to reach out to harper woods vet hospital, but the hospital refused to engage in contact with them. I called up there and told them that petsmart is trying to contact them about my prescription. They told me "oh you have 3 refills. You can just come in and get it." I said no, I don't want to because you guys charge too much. The woman I spoke to said she would get this resolved. The next day comes, and still no change. I go in the office on Monday and they tell me "we don't deal with outside pharmacies." Why wouldn't you tell me that when I called the first time? You'd rather let my dog go without his medication instead of just letting me know that? Nice.
They gave me a script that I have to mail in. That's more days that my dog has to go without now. All because they can't simply respond to an "outside pharmacy."
You guys are my vet, not my drug dealer. You guys don't truly care about animals if you're willing to prolong a prescription refill for an entire week while not contacting me and letting me know that you won't respond to an outside pharmacy. My dog has nearly scratched and gnawed himself raw because I've had to wait for the refill. Congratulations, you just lost a very long time and loyal customer all because you "don't deal with outside pharmacies." The greed disgusts me.
Now, instead of losing out on a drug sale, you can lose out on thousands in the future that you would've made off of me and my other numerous animals. How's that for trying to squeeze as much as you can out of your patients?
It's time to find a vet that actually has my animals best interest at heart. This one would really rather make animals suffer if it means they can't make a few bucks on a drug sale. It's an absolutely disgusting operation that won't get another cent from me.

I can’t imagine taking my cats anywhere else. Every single staff member is compassionate and professional. My cats received the very best care and I felt supported in every decision I made - especially the difficult ones. I will be forever grateful for Dr. Dexter, Dr. Wright, and every single staff member at HWVH.

The receptionists, vet techs, and veterinarian (Dr. Brooks) were awesome during my visit. They were able to fit me into their busy schedule for a second opinion for my sweet cat Sasha. Although her prognosis was not good, they were extremely compassionate and answered all of my questions. Thank you so much ❤️.

I was very anxious about continuing care at home for my puppy. The staff at Harper Woods Vet Hospital took great care of him and made sure I was educated on how to care for him at home. They made me feel empowered and because of that my puppy made it through a very tough illness. I am grateful for their professionalism and dedication to their work.
