If you allow yourself to be in a crowd that is very angry, or filled with craving, you will consume that energy in the collective consciousness, and you will hurt yourself. That is why environment is another kind of food. As a society, we have to create the kind of environment that can help provide us with the wholesome energy of hope, peace and insight, such as the Detroit Zen temple has done.

I have known the Zen Center's abbot, Hwalson Sunim, for more than 35 years and the vice abbot, Myungju Sunim, for more than 25 years and have always found the Detroit Zen Center a friendly, welcoming and comfortable place to be. I know Hwalson Sunim and Myungju Sunim to be very open, respectful and supportive to anyone seeking spiritual growth or simply seeking a peaceful place to gather their thoughts. In my experience, the Zen Center is notable for its calm atmosphere and generosity of spirit. I highly recommend it as a warm and nurturing place in our hectic contemporary world.

I live at the Detroit Zen Center as a caretaker resident. This has been absolutely the most peaceful and relaxed environment I have seen in my 65 years on this planet. The Zen center is open to ANYONE who wishes to learn or practice Korean Buddhism and Zen. Don’t be fooled if you read a review posted with purely malicious intent by an obviously mentally unstable person. There is no abuse, manipulation or anything of the sort at this center. Everyone I’ve met here have been nothing but kind, friendly and welcoming. Nothing is required of anyone, except to take your shoes off and to respect rules of the center and Buddhism. The Monks Sunnim and Myungi have a very calm, kind and welcoming demeanor and live a very simple righteous life in service to the members of the center and the community.

I've been in and out of the Detroit Zen Center going on 4 or 5 years now. I've generally had a great experience every time I have visited. Sunim has been like a father to me at times giving me advice I wish I could get from my own. During the pandemic lock downs I was in another country and going through dark times. Sunim made himself available to talk any time via zoom and I really appreciated his support as well as Myungju's and the community's. The Detroit Zen Center is a place that will challenge you to change the way you think and behave in an attempt to bring more tranquility, peace, and harmony into your life. If you think you've already gotten everything figured out, maybe the center isn't for you. If you're looking to make change, Sunim is the most advanced teacher I have come across on all of my travels and I feel incredibly blessed to have him and the Detroit Zen Center available to me. Thank you for everything DZC ?

Hi, I live at the Detroit Zen Center as a Resident Caretaker and I couldn't be more grateful to live here. The environment cultivated by the Abbot and Vice Abbot is one of peace, respect and compassion. This is a great place to go if you want to deepen your meditation practice in an authentic and non-dogmatic Zen tradition.I have over ten years of communal living experience through work and school, and this is by far the healthiest community that I have been involved with.Thank you to Myungju and Sunim, and all the students at DZC for your warmth and support.

My affinity for taking moments of quiet, internal reflection and self-prescribed “righteous” tasks led me to begin formal zen practice with the Detroit Zen Center in 2020. My experience being a part of this community serves as a constant reminder that my energy makes a difference no matter where I choose to place it. I value the interactions had in this space because they always carry a pleasant spirit of care and dedication to the welfare of the zen community and practice at-large. No matter how much time passes between visits I am always shown a warm, compassionate welcome upon my return. I find much gratitude in the connection I have with this community and its members.

In a world that seems to celebrate vanity and materialism, the Detroit Zen Center is a much-needed oasis. I first came to the DZC over 17 years ago and I have never failed to be awed by the compassion and selfless dedication of the resident monks. The process of getting over one's 'self' is not always pretty (and is seldom comfortable), but here I found the care and support that I needed to sustain my spiritual practice. It is the soil in which I grow best.I cannot recommend this place more highly if you have an open mind and are serious about your spiritual practice.

From the moment you step foot into the center you will sense how special of a place it is. There is a quiet that exists there that is rarely found in modern life. Awareness is contagious in its halls, presence comes with ease, and the sensory experience is unmatched. I went there first out of curiosity, and I find myself coming back sporadically over the years. As beautiful as the space is, there exists something even more beautiful inside. The people. Walking, living, eating and breathing Zen they are always happy to teach, provide feedback, and encouragement. I have always experienced a warmth and a welcoming that is unparalleled every time I stop by for a visit. If you decide to check it out, I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

This is an amazing place filled with people who are caring and wanting to help. My wife and I love coming to the Zen Center, where we came for our spiritual journey and are so grateful for it. Coming here always feels like home. The abbot is someone who only wants to help you on your journey and he may even give feedback, who wouldn’t want feedback from someone with such wisdom about spiritual journey. If you can’t handle feedback then maybe you need to look inside and see what is preventing you from accepting. The abbot is the first person to help me get over Covid fears. I can’t say enough positive things about this place and it’s leaders. It isn’t easy but anything worth working for never comes easy. Come here and get help discovering your truth, accept that we all need help and guidance. I’d recommend this place to anyone who wants to further their spiritual journey. Thank you Zen center for everything you do and pushing toward the truths we know.
