We built a beautiful creative workspace and wanted two high quality American-made office chairs. Steelcase came to mind, along with Hermann Miller, as the go-to chairs in the design/creative work world. We got samples from Steelcase and checked out as many chairs as we could in Florida. We read endless reviews online, etc. We went to and contacted Authorized Steelcase Dealers (from Steelcase's own website) to get prices. Some got back to us in a timely fashion and others weren't responsive in a timely way. Perhaps our order for 2 $1,600 chairs was too small for some dealers. The Gesture chair was their top of the line chair in 2017 and received many good reviews as did Steelcase for standing behind their products.First, the chairs sent from Steelcase were made in Mexico when we were led to believe they were made in Michigan by American workers. We do not have a problem with global manufacturing if the quality control is kept up to standards and inferior materials are not used to cheapen product cost. Second, fast forward to 2023 and while we have loved the chairs, the seat sides were made with defective/inferior material that is cracking and falling apart. This part of the seat is listed as being covered under the 12-year workmanship warranty, yet Steelcase does not want to honor their warranty. These chairs are not used full-time and the people using the chairs are way below the weight capacity of 400 lbs the chairs are rated for use. The design of the soft side material was either defective or a bad design from the beginning. You decide on why it failed in such a short period of time? See photos below. You would expect a short lifespan for an inexpensive office store chair but not a chair that exceeds $1,600 and is supposedly made of high quality materials. Who has not owned or sat in car with vinyl/leather seats that are subjected to temperature extremes that are well over 10 years old and not fallen apart? This is a reasonable expectation of any product that is touted as high quality and durable. Every company has some defective products that are made and it is up to the company to own their mistakes and do right by their customers by honoring warranties. This is how a company builds a reputation or ruins it.Anyone can write a review about a chair that they have not used for an extended period of time. This is a real long-term review of the Gesture chair and how Steelcase Inc. does not stand behind their product or honor their warranty.

I grew up here in West Michigan and I just want to purchase a nice comfortable chair for my home which was made in the USA. Why can't I afford a chair made in my own back yard but I can afford any selection of thousands sold online from China? This is troubling..... if the blood sweat and tears of my community went into making these things... we shouldn't have to own a million dollar organization to get our hands on the products that we make here.

Ordered a chair from them 2 weeks ago. They use Fedex for shipping and I have been running around to find the package. Fedex has not attempted to deliver the package at all and its just being passed around in my city from one distribution centre to another for the last 7 days. The chair might be good but their shipping is absolutely terrible. Use a different courier or ship it some place that I can pick it up myself and I will be happy to do so.

Steelcase needs to modernize their business model and sell directly to end users. Currently they pawn you off on a local dealer and I've reached out and contacted two and received zero responses. I guess if you're not looking to supply an entire build's worth of furniture your business is not important to these resellers and that reflects poorly on Steelcase since they don't sell a lot directly. It's also crazy that they don't offer free shipping as there is likely more than enough margin built into the products and their bulk shipper discount accounts with the shipping couriers to cover this. In an economy where businesses and banks are folding by the day, maybe you should reconsider that before it's too late.

I'd love to be able to review my desk, but I can't. As I still don't have it, a month later. This is the worst shopping experience for the price point I have ever experienced. I had a $150 Amex offer if you spent $750 in on steelcase.com, so I decided to order from Steelcase as I thought they had a good reputation for quality office furniture. I ordered in mid-march, well before the offer expired. It appeared they charged my card right away and I would get the $150 cash back offer, however, in reality, they split the order into two parts, reverted the pending full charge, charged separately upon shipping but didn't charge on the same statement and didn't charge the desk until after the offer expired, so guess what? No $150 credit. As if that's not bad enough, they ship the first part of the order (the desk monitor stand) first at the end of March, and then mark the order shipped. I email customer service and received a response that the desk would shipping on 4/12 via fedex ground and I would receive notification and it would be delivered on 4/13. Guess what? No desk, no shipping notification. So, I call on 4/14 and SIT ON HOLD FOR 30 minutes while the customer service rep tries to "figure out where the desk is". She comes back and says "well it's with our shipper and names some shipper I've never even heard of. She also doesn't have a working tracking number. I asked why it didn't come fedex and get some song and dance about being a large item. Now, it seems to me, that they would know the size of the desk up front and not indicate on both the order and the first customer service response that it's shipping fed ex if it's too large. Note: I looked up their shipping specs listed on their website and it's not too large. I was told it's somewhere with the shipping, the sender doesn't have a valid tracking number but I "should" get contacted in the next 5 days or so by the shipper to set a delivery time. 4/15 update - contacted by the delivery company. They will only deliver to the front door of my condo building. This will be an issue as total the desk and legs should weigh around 90lbs. Fedex, on the other hand would have delivered to the actual condo unit. For the price point, one would expect better service all the way around. Worst online experience, stay away, do not order from their website. At least when I got my chair from Herman Miller, they were totally on top of their business and customer service.
