Mean, nasty people. They used to refuse fertilizer sales to people who grew cannabis. It was the law at the time, but they took it a step further by grilling anyone they didn't like the looks of, asking them multiple questions about what they were growing.Once the clerk asked me several times, as if I was required to declare what I was growing in my garden. When I told her blueberry bushes, she literally had to call a manager to see if that was ok. I thought that was really crummy. But it shows just how clannish they are

DO NOT SHOP HERE! Their plants were packed in styrofoam and they sold me an orchid with a severely damaged root system and claim it's perfectly fine and will not give me a store credit. The owner called me a liar and never apologized for selling me a damaged product and claims to be. "master grower"but didn't disclose the root damage, stating that "out of bloom" is the same as "as is" which is NOT TRUE. This is a horrible business run by rude and horrible people and the orchid was my birthday present and I had no idea it was 90% damaged planted in styrofoam (something a "master grower" would never allow. I'm so upset and was treated so terribly on my birthday. Sad. Do not shop here

Large garden center with helpful staff. Came with questions and left with a bag of soil and more confidence with my plant situation at home. Easy spot to get gifts for the gardener in your family. Plus they have a cute cat :)

This review is in response to several less than enjoyable visits to this store after Mark transferred ownership. The main store has fewer products I find appealing and significantly unique to merit a visit; but I assume someone who knows what they are doing in terms of inventory management has decided that the real place to make a profit is on the boring clothing line that has taken over most of the retail space. What I cannot accept after frequenting this shop for years is the rude, nay today was absolutely abusive, behavior from the woman acting as clerk in the main store. She is unfriendly, abrupt and dismissive when it is a good day. I recall her snippy response about how people shouldn’t be touching the less than friendly cat Wallace (a full year pre-Covid) which is a strange thing to say about a store animal. But about two months ago when my 70plus mother needed help getting a bale of straw into her car, she acted as if we were out of line and imposing on the staff by asking for some help. She then launched into an unnecessary spiel about the lazy people who didn’t want to work and that was why DownTown H&G was short-handed.This week on Tuesday I went to pick up a couple of clay plant plates that seemed a decent price. When the price was different in the register from the marked price on the item I politely corrected her and was given a nasty, mean begrudging adjustment with an implication that I should have paid the higher unmarked price. I go back there today three days later and the price has not been corrected. And this woman slams the register around and yells “Really?” at me when I ask for the labeled price when I purchase two more of same item. It is particularly egregious that this person should be so rude because I could easily have paid the overcharge and then returned within thirty days and asked not only for a refund of the difference but the Michigan overcharge law compensation which would easily have maxed out at five dollars each instance.By correcting the problem at POS I was being considerate to the staff and the business owner. As it is I will reconsider shopping at this store ever again. And if the Clerk listed as SMA at 1:24PM on 11/10/2023 is not the store owner or related to the store owner, then it is well past time the store owner sat down and corrected this person about what proper customer service does and does not look like. Being abusive to a customer over one’s own error is definitely not the mark of excellent service. This woman makes shopping at this store unpleasant. Downtown Home and Garden has nothing that cannot be acquired elsewhere if the shopping experience is nothing but unpleasant.

This store is a gem and a must stop for anyone interested in home and gardening. They have everything from birdfeeders to camping equipment and just about everything in between. I can’t get a little expensive for their retail prices… It’s a great place to get ideas. There’s also a small cafe inside and you can spend hours here.

This review is more for grabbing the attention of the owners or whoever is in charge of plants at Downtown H&G, because actually this place is great, 5 Stars. Great products for pets, cooking, and gardening. They stock great brands. Personally, I love that they have Arborwear clothing, Lodge cast iron cookwear, and I became a collector of Polish Pottery because of this store. So, all that said, there is an issue...STOP PUTTING THE BARE ROOT FLOWERING PLANTS (i.e. Trilliums, Bloodroots, Virginia Bluebells, Trout Lillies, Mayapples, Twinleafs, etc.) ON THE SHELVES OVER THAT RADIATOR. Even if they weren't over the radiator you shouldn't store them indoors. The heat and the light are forcing the plants too early and creating conditions that cause the plants to fail before customers take them home. As well, if the plants are planted outdoors they're shocked by the difference in conditions between Michigan Spring and the cozy confines of Downtown H&G's store. Every year I come to buy these products, they're over the radiator and there's already mold forming within the containers on the rootstock, and plant material that has emerged is beginning to rot. I pick the best specimens available and hope they make it.Solution: Just store them in the drive-thru warehouse area that you all have. It's such a better place to store those items. If I see changes come next year, I will certainly change this review to a 5-Star. Don't let me down DHG!

Love this place-- so many wonderful things to buy. 208 is household items, Polish pottery, high end cookware. The big barn is all about plants, any kind of garden need, backyard furniture, wild bird seeds and feeders. Good selection of hearty outerwear and pet supplies.
