My partner attended the University of Michigan for undergrad all the way through her PhD (roughly 10 years). When I met her in 2018, she introduced me to the wonderful place that is By The Pound (we affectionately refer to it as BTP), and it was always a treat to visit. We always stocked up on their candy (which, by the way, is of the highest quality and with EXTREMELY fair prices), coffee, almost any flour you can think of, and any odd spice that you may need. If you only need a tablespoon of something for a recipe that isn't in your cupboard, you don't have to go to Meijer and buy a whole bottle of something you'll rarely ever use! The employees are all very friendly as well. Whenever you need assistance, they go above and beyond to help. Since, we moved to Athens, GA, and BTP is at the top of the list (right next to Sparrow Meat Market) of stores we miss. We often talk about tossing our graduate degrees and just opening up a bulk foods shop here in town. We miss having this resource at our fingertips. The past 2 years, we return to the Michigan area during the winter holidays and always make sure to stop at BTP. Their treats make great stocking stuffers, and I ALWAYS have to stock up on those dark chocolate coconut clusters (I just finished the last one -- hence writing this review -- and I'm sad I can't find anything like them on the internet or here in town). Anyways, highly, HIGHLY recommend By The Pound.

I'm so disappointed it took me so long to find By the Pound. The medicinal grade herb selection alone is worth a visit and the prices are very reasonable. If you're a baker, visit this place. If you're a tea/coffee connoisseur, visit this place. If you like your pantry stocked with a variety of whole grains and legumes, visit this place. If there's a spice you can't find, visit this place. If you're an herbalist, visit this place. If you want to reduce your food packaging waste, visit this place. Long story short, visit this place!

Overall this is a great healthy food staple store for bulk items. It's my primary source of poppy seeds, whole dry milk and specialty flours. They have a lot of candy and baking chocolate. The store is managed as usual for his previous owner, so expect classical music. I might recommend signing up for the newsletter from the store. Some sales are a nice bonus. This business has had many improvements during the last few years. The store space is bigger and browsing is more comfortable. It seems they can carry more variety, such as milk products. Parking is ample and easily accessible.

EXCEPTIONAL people, products, shopping experience! So grateful for this local gem. They offer just the right ingredients in just the right quantities at a fair price. And in case that’s not enough, what truly distinguishes BTP is the dedicated staff. Their customer service is unsurpassed - these folks set the bar! Immense gratitude and appreciation for all that’s offered here - a community treasure!

Always had good experiences here. Staff is super helpful whenever I have questions. Prices are fair, and there is always a good selection of nuts, flours, coffees, etc. I signed up for their emails and they don’t send a bunch of spam, just occasional info on products and sales (yay for my inbox). I like that they let you use your own containers, too. Also, the small kitchen utensils (spatula, funnels) I purchased here are good quality and have ended up coming in super handy in my kitchen. I am a very happy customer and gladly support their business.

What an awesome find! Great service and specialty items. From candies to coffee to baking supplies and spices, this place has it all. The smells are incredible and prices more than reasonable. A fun place to stock up with snacks before you travel on those long car rides or just getting ready to stay in and watch a movie/game.

We love by the pound! The coffee and tea selection are amazing in and of themselves but add in candy, spices, home pantry staples and excellent customer service and you have yourself an experience that you simply cannot find elsewhere. Yes, shopping here is an experience and as someone who dreads shopping of all types, I'm always up to visit BTP!

Every time I shop here, I’m reminded how much I love it! Prices are very affordable and the selection is incredible. Fantastic customer service. Bring your own containers/jars or they have bags you can use.

The cashier made me feel very unwelcome and was offensive when speaking to me about a mistake I made. It was my first visit and I didn't know how I was supposed to bring things to the register. The place was busy and I have agoraphobia and a learning disability. So I was already flustered. I didn't think the signs were very clear and she told me it's because "people just didn't read them." I didn't see them, if i had I would of read it. I did look. I was actually hurt by her tone. I don't think I'll go back.

I buy herbal caffeine-free teas, gummy worms, Napoleon sours, nut goodies, and dry pineapple rounds. Prices are up to 60% less than the grocery store. Repeat customer.

The choose to lose program is everything I was looking for in a work out program. As someone who has already lost some weight on my own, I became bored by the same cardio workouts. The type of exercises Alex challenges us with each class are both physically and mentally engaging. I enjoy the people who workout with him and never feel intimidated to try new things. This will be my fifth session and I've already hit some of my personal goals. Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired by fitness again.

Wonderful place serving a vital "never-knew-we-needed-it" niche: bulk foods with range well beyond the supermarkets. Teas from Japan, China, India, Korea; coffees; grains; flours; herbs & spices; sugars; flours .... & candy store candies. Must-visit in AA!
