Get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic you trust. Here is a partial list of repairs I had to do within just a few months on a 2011 Pathfinder in "perfect" condition, with "all maintenance done": brakes/rotors all around plus two new brake calipers, AC compressor replacement, replace badly repaired AC line (someone repaired it with a rubber hose!), engine air filter was completely caked in grime, probably hadn't been replaced in 5 years, brake fluid flush/fill (old fluid was very old), electrical problem with radio, body rot leaking water into passenger compartment, front lower control arm (failed ball joint). Although this vehicle presented well, it clearly did not have any maintenance for a long time.
