I can’t say enough about my experience with Kate at Moon Baby salon. I am so picky about haircuts and I had been wanting a shag for a long time. I cut my own bangs right before seeing Kate and really messed them up. Kate was so patient with listening to what I wanted. She knew exactly what I was going for and reassured me she had a lot of experience with curly hair. She gave me such an amazing shag haircut and styled it with my natural curls. I usually don’t like wearing my hair curly but she made me fall in love with my natural texture again. She also blended my bangs perfectly. I can even wear it blown out and it doesn’t look choppy at all. I got so many compliments on my cut. It’s been about a month since the cut and it’s growing out nicely. Kate is awesome. I live in CA and will be seeing her for maintenance cuts every time I visit Boston!

The first time I went to this salon, I got a phone call from my mom’s hospice that she had taken a turn for the worse and I was very rattled and anxious to leave, which I explained to them after the fact. Also there was miscommunication between my stylist and myself which I totally own, but I was unhappy with my hair which was partially on me. (Again had I not been in a rush to deal with a dying parent maybe it could’ve been addressed at that time)
The second time my hair came out *perfect* although my stylist Brianna was rude and condescending the entire time which made the experience unpleasant, but whatever my hair looked fantastic so it was worth it and I didn’t feel like making it an issue although I’d also decided I would rather stop dying my hair than go back to her.
What gets to me is that both times I was there I was extremely gaslit both by Brianna and management about so much it was unsettling.
- my hair came out not as I expected - my fault for not understanding the process being done as opposed to possibly the stylist not explaining it adequately.
- I loved my hair the second time - was told I didn’t like it even though I have numerous emails expressing how happy I was with it (????)
- oddly difficult to get them to provide color maintaining products (was told to use manic panic, which when I’m paying $400+ for a custom color seems ridiculous, why not just do my hair myself then? Oh right, if i touch it up at home that means less appointments)
- When they sold me the wrong color in a color bomb and I asked if I could just buy another one closer to what my hair color actually was, I was fired as a client (which I’m fine with since I wasn’t planning on going back, just getting color maintaining product until I found a new salon).
I was not rude, I didn’t ask for a refund on the wrong color (which I was told wasn’t wrong even though it clearly was a totally different color), I just apparently had the audacity to ask to purchase additional color that actually would’ve matched the color I paid a premium to maintain.
Ok then.
Pros - pretty salon
*Good location
*Communicative front of house
*When hair comes out well it is fantastic
Cons - stylist was rude both times I saw her
*Extremely high prices
*Difficulty getting product and being made to feel like they’re doing you a favor for a service you’re paying for. I’ve never dealt with a salon that made me so overall anxious.
* absurd cancellation policy. If you’re disabled this may be problematic for you.
* offer option to have stylist wear mask but then you get to listen to the stylist complain about it at length (again if you’re disabled this may be a problem for you)
So yeah if I’d been rude or demanding or disliked my hair both times I’d had it done, I’d totally understand. I never asked for any refunds, I simply asked to buy product that more closely matched my hair color (which I had stressed I loved), and get told *I* am the problem. Absurd. For a company that prides itself on inclusivity it’s pretty clear most of that is performative since if you have a crisis like, I dunno, someone dying, or a minor complaint like “you sold me the wrong hair color” that’s totally on you.
Edit: hey thanks for the passive aggressive response, I said in my review I’d been fired as a client so your reiterating as if I had not mentioned it was kind of pointless but your cloying fake tone just proves my point about what kind of business you run.
Also the “custom color” hair bomb you sold me appears to just be unmodified Keracolor lavender for twice the price, but I originally was gonna let that slide, but now, nah.

Everyone at Moon Baby = kindest salon team ever. This is my first time going to a salon where there isn’t gossip and the warmth is genuine ? plus my hair looks so fetch now.
Specialties: Wild hair colors. Healthy hair. Cool cuts. Most beautiful restroom ever. But the peeps are the real speciality.
Stylist: Kate Black. They really listen to your hair wants and will do exactly what you ask and/or makes you look super hip with their advice ??♀️ I don’t have one, but they’re a mullet guru.

HI, Person who answered the phone who was so incredibly rude and awful!!!,
Every time I was present in the establishment, the one at the front counter, (the one responding to this review and the one who 'cancelled" me due to the fact I am not their demographic, (i.e. young, hip).
Rude, obnoxious, terrible, insult, hurtful. Age discrimination. Nice job! You're attempts to be cool and inclusive have alienated a high paying customer demographic, which will not only hurt your income, also makes you age phobic.
Wow. When was told no one available for apt during times I am available, I asked if they coordinate with another salon they cud refer me to. Was immediately told “I will cancel you and good luck”. No bad words exchanged. Regular customer of 1.5 years. I am shocked and hurt and in tears. Age discrimination. Regular customer for 1.5 years could not or would not book me for my usual 5 week appointment. When called to see if there was a cancellation possible to get an appointment sooner, quickly was told “We are soooo booked! I will cancel your appointment and good luck finding another salon.” Wow! A year and a half every 5 weeks. Paying over 220 each time plus tip. So quickly dismissed. Wow. Awful . Just awful. I’m in tears. Terrible people awful. Age discrimination! Over priced awful mean terrible people. —- Do Not use this salon if you are over 35. Very age discriminatory. Actively rude to “older” clients. To encourage older clients to go else where.

Had a haircut today at this salon for the first time ever with Kacey Lynn Ellis and I absolutely love my cut!! I went in with inspo pics and told her what I liked from each pic and she offered realistic guidance and really listened to what I wanted. I wanted these face framing pieces that look cute specifically when my hair was tucked behind my ears and she executed it perfectly *chefs kiss* I absolutely recommend coming here!! :)

Not to brag but I've actually never looked hotter than I do after sitting in Kate Black's chair. Mullets are gender affirming care, get into it

This was my second time going to Moon Baby and having Christine do my hair. I have had the same haircut for most of my life and was nervous to make a big change, but Christine listened to my ideas and made magic happen. The cut is so nice and frames my face well. She is so good at what she does. The salons ambience is very salem-esque. The vibes are chill. I have been recommending Moon Baby since my first visit.

This is the second time I've gotten my hair done by Kelsey. She's rad and pays amazing attention to detail. She takes the time to really listen to exactly what I want and repeats it back to me in her own words so there's no confusion at all. I opt for the silent appt because I'm autistic and have trouble with small talk, and it never felt awkward or uncomfortable. It's always a great experience at moon baby. The price was right, the cut is great, the stylist is amazing, and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Big fan.

I came to the salon with some trauma from a past experience and explained how significant my hair meant to me. Christine listened and guided me to a cut that really complimented my face and look. Not only was it flattering, but she gave me a look that honored my relationship with my hair as well. I love Christine and the magic she produces. I also really adore the owner as she was so kind and attentive! Moonbaby Salon is a place of talent and care.

i cannot speak more highly of kelsey at moon baby!! i was having a rough week and didn’t have the mental energy to chat through my appointment, and she was super respectful of that as i read my book for most of it. i felt so comfortable the whole time! she did a wonderful job on my hair- i have curly hair with lots and lots of layers and she was able to achieve the cut i wanted. i typically wear my hair up but i’ve been letting it down so much just to show off my cool haircut :) i asked for a 70’s style shag with lots of face framing pieces and transition and she did exactly that. i love the folx at moon baby and will definitely be back !

I moved to the area 6 years ago and gave Moonbaby a try. I got Christine and received the best haircut I ever had. I have thicker hair and it seemed anywhere else I’d go always left me with a blunt cut which I don’t like for myself. She is so fast too! In and out in under an hour even with long thick hair. I’ve returned numerous times and always request Christine. She gives great advice and never has cut my hair shorter than I wanted. I recently chopped my own hair off due to financial reasons and I am counting down the days I can see Christine to make it better (sorry lol.) I also think it’s worth mentioning I’ve never felt uncomfortable there, some salons give you that “cliquey” vibe, but not at Moonbaby. I plan on coming back to Salem for my haircuts whenever we move away :)
