While I'm not often in the market for women's costume jewelry and accessories, I did just find myself in a bit of a pickle. With a play opening only one day away, my character was still unadorned by the necessary accoutrements to bring her to life. (Yes, I did say 'her'. We have Jean Genet and his play 'The Maids' to thank for that one. You see, it was Genet's original intent, and our production's choice, to have three male actors play the three female characters in the play. Long story short: I don't have a chest of women's jewelry lying around the house for such an occasion.) Enter Nelson's on Elm Street. I was skeptical when I pulled up. It doesn't look like much from the outside. Once inside, I felt myself breathe. It's like The Little Mermaid's treasure trove. They had exactly what I needed for my character Madame. Earrings, scarves, bracelets, etc. Not one choice, but many. For $15.00 I was able to get everything I was missing. Imagine a 6'2" guy walking in looking for specific women's accessories and you'll get a sense of my anxiety. The staff was amazingly helpful, offering me both comfort and a vast selection of low-priced (theatrical budgets are notoriously low) options. With their help, Madame made her debut looking perfect. So, whenever you find yourself having opening night pressure to look great, give Nelson's a visit.
