Taking a detour off Market Square, I came upon Inn Street, a very narrow one-lane street that has been closed off to form a pedestrian mall with shops. The first one was the Brass Lyon. This shop has a nautical theme which fits well in this coastal city that was once a bustling seaport. Inside, I found a variety of merchandise. On the lower level, I saw T-shirts, sport caps, and jewelry cases as well as compasses. Chelsea clocks and weather instruments hung above the main area. Upstairs, I found a lot of models of sailing ships – yachts and old tall ships. I particularly liked one that was gaff-rigged which is my preferred rigging because it provides more sail area for the same mast height which means less hardware and other benefits. There were a lot of brass items that included door knockers and plaques. One unusual item was called Shark Off. It was a piece of jewelry that was supposed to repel sharks. As with most Newburyport shops, everything here was quality. I rate Brass Lyon at 4.50 and can recommend a visit. Great store. Terrific selection of nautical gifts, signs and t-shirts to name a few. We make a point to stop in here each time we are in Newburyport.

I call this business "a shoppe of curiosities". Signs, models of schooners and vehicles, books, nightlights with seashells and many other knick knacks in this two level shoppe. The sales associate was very friendly and helpful.My friend, she was drawn to the outdoor signs, especially the one that said "Relax". I noticed "Made in the USA" on the back ?. I was drawn to the half size school bus because it reminded me of the bus my kids take to school.Merchandise is pricey, but, the sign I bought for my friend was worth it.I recommend stopping by and checking the shoppe out.

The best! Nautical shop in all of New England.The wonderful girl behind the desk was more then helpful she went out of her way to make me feel well taken care of. Will be back from Tampa Florida.

The owner really doesn't like kids. When I was younger I would be kicked out as soon as I was noticed, even if I was looking for a Christmas present. The owner threatened to call the cops on my friend and I for playing guitar 100 feet from his store last summer. He said, "I'm not threatening you, I'm just saying that if you continue to play I will have no choice but to report you to the police." We are experienced musicians just trying to spread some joy. This was during the Yankee Homecoming festival when crowds and music are everywhere. He said he could barely tolerate the bands who have permits, and tells them to play quieter if he can hear them from inside his store.

We stopped into Brass Lyon while strolling downtown Newburyport. The shop has lost that cluttered over-crowded feeling and replaced it with room to appreciate all the fabulous things they have! It seems likely we'll be back to visit/buy quite often.

The Brass Lyon has always been a local landmark but now it's even better with the new owners giving it a fresh organized look and some new goods! If you can't find a gift or souvenir here you won't find it anywhere! Truly a gem.

We come up from Texas every summer and The Brass Lyon is as much a part of the trip as the town. Don't ever go to Newburyport without making part of your day.
